Google Cellphone Service: More Details Emerge

googlelogo

Google has reportedly made a deal to offer a cellphone service that uses both the Sprint and T-Mobile networks. It would combine this with use of currently unused frequencies to offer high-speed data in cities.

A report by The Information says the project is codenamed Nova and describes a 2015 launch as likely. It would follow in the lines of Metro PCS and Virgin Mobile in leasing access to a major network and offering service as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator. Under the plan, it would be able to offer wider coverage by accessing two different networks, something currently only done by a couple of relatively small operators.

One big difference is that Google plans to bid for the rights to use currently unallocated frequencies in the 3.5GHz band, which should allow it to offer high-speed data at reduced costs. The big limitation is that signals in this band travel a relatively short range, so it would be more suited to densely populated areas where it would be economical for Google to set up a large number of smaller transmitters.

Phones would have to support the use of both the major national networks and the new city data networks. Google is said to be working on revising Android to be compatible with this, while it’s also reported it may manufacture and sell its own handset to customers.

With Google not commenting publicly, it’s hard to say exactly what it hopes to achieve and how it will stand out from competitors. However, the most common speculation is that it wants to use the multiple-network set-up to have the selling point of unlimited data plans that costs below the current going rates.

As well as potentially winning customers, that may also increase the time users spend online, something that indirectly benefits many of Google’s other areas of business.

Everything You Need to Know About New Spider-Man Universe (and All Its Spidermen)

spidey

First of all, the Spider-Verse contained in the Spider-Man comics is huge and far-reaching. For a great example, just look at the Spider-Man video game, Shattered Dimensions. It lets you play as four different versions of Spide-Man. Do you know why that is? Because the Spider-Verse is filled with WAY more Spidermen and Spiderwomen than you would have any idea.

Thankfully, the guys over at i09 have picked apart the Spider-Verse and can help any of you noobs coming to the party late. I feel the need to mention, I, for one, am excited about all (as I have Peter Porker, the Amazing Spider Ham issue one in mint condition and this reboot makes him a canon character which now greatly increases the worth of said comic book).

Yes, there is a pig version of Spiderman, as you can see above. That is how insane things have gotten.

Why You Need IDW’s New ‘Samurai Jack’ Comic Book in Your Life

jack

Samurai Jack was one of the greatest cartoons ever made. This is not a question or a discussion. This is a solid fact. From the animation style to the brilliant, time-spanning story line, nothing about the show wasn’t exceptional. That fact alone should be enough to sell you on the new IDW Samurai Jack comic book adaptation that furthers the story of this beloved swordsman lost in time and space. If you need more convincing, check out this review of the series from ComicsAlliance.

If you sit down and read the first fifteen issues of the ongoing series, you’ll see how well they come together as one vast, epic story that takes Jack in every possible direction — just like the show.

“Epic” is a word that gets tossed around a lot, but Samurai Jack lives up to it. It’s a vast adventure that works on multiple levels, and if you haven’t been reading the series, it’s absolutely worth catching up.

Essentially, the IDW comic book is the next season of the show we never got. If you were ever a fan of this stellar show, you owe it to yourself to pick up the equally stellar comic book.

Windows 10 Biggest Gaming Announcements (and Holograms!)

Microsoft had its Windows 10 press conference recently and unveiled some rather interesting features that seem to be aimed at their hardcore gaming audience. From being able to stream your Xbox Live games to your computer to the potential for holograms to make an appearance, we shouldn’t count Windows out as it seems the OS is making a huge attempt to bring gaming back as a core feature for their die-hard fans.

Now we just have to wait and see how the fans take to IT. 3D hologram Minecraft in your living room? Safe to say they will take to it just fine, as it looks super badass.

Check Out This Millennium Falcon Converted To A Record Player

mil sexy

Though it took nine months of work, this Millennium Falcon modded into a record player is one of the coolest things ever. Not only was the shape already perfect to be re-purposed, but the extra parts cost to make this Star Wars toy into a working record player cost around two dollars.

Not even kidding you.

The work, on the other hand, took just under a year. But if you are a geek with a love of Star Wars and listening to old vinyl, what is cooler than this?

Not much.

Cops Using Radar To Search Homes From Outside

marshals

Dozens of law enforcement agencies are using radar that can detect humans moving in their homes, without the need to gain entry according to a USA Today report that has reawakened the debate about the crossover of technology and the law.

The newspaper says at least 50 agencies, including the FBI and US Marshals Service, are using such radar devices.

The main reason for using such devices is said to be to protect officer safety when preparing to storm a building, giving them an insight into the number of people inside and their location.

However, the USA Today investigation was sparked by a court case last month involving officers using a radar device as part of an operation to arrest a parole violator.

In a judgment written in surprisingly clear and everyday language, appeal court judges said the other facts of the case meant that the radar use didn’t have to be a deciding issue, despite being raised by the violator. However, they warned that using such devices could raise two, somewhat paradoxical, issues in future cases:

  • using radar to track movements in a home could violate the 4th amendment, which bars unreasonable searches; but
  • if using radar was considered legitimate, it could be classed as an initial “protective sweep”. That could override the usual legal position by which officers entering a property to arrest a suspect are allowed to search for weapons, even if the alleged offense isn’t weapons-related.

A 2001 Supreme Court ruling classed thermal image scanning from outside a property as a search that thus requires a warrant. That ruling noted the same should apply to radar systems, but it doesn’t yet appear anyone has successfully persuaded a court to uphold that principle.

Bill Gates and Jimmy Fallon do Processed Poop Water Taste Test [Video]

In a recent episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Bill Gates challenged Jimmy Fallon to drink a glass of poop water that was processed through the Omniprocessor, a machine that turns sewer sludge into regular, clean drinking water.

To learn more about the Omniprocessor, you can see the machine in action at this link.
