Epic Green Goblin Silicone Mask [Pics + Video]

This Green Goblin Silicone mask from the folks over at Composite Effects is one of the most awesome and detailed masks of the character I’ve seen online. If it wouldn’t be for the $600 price tag, I’d get one right away, but unfortunately, with 3 kids, I don’t have that much to put on a mask!

“New Horizons” Probe Takes First Picture From Pluto

pluto

Pluto is a reddish color. Until now that was largely an assumption, but a new probe photo confirms that is indeed the case.

The New Horizons probe has just taken its first photo of Pluto, as shown above. It’s a bit blurry, which is excusable as it was taken from 115 million kilometers away. Much better images will follow as it approaches Pluto and passes within 7,750 miles on July 14. That fly-by will complete a full house of space probes visiting the nine major orbiting bodies of the solar system.

Of course photos of Pluto do already exist thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope, but those shots are actually captured as monochrome data. The colors are added artificially. In some cases they are assigned to simulate what astronomers believe the human eye would see if it had the same level of magnification as the telescope. In other cases the chosen colors aren’t intended to reflect reality, but instead used to enhance distinctive features or highlight features that wouldn’t be visible to the human eye.

The picture also depicts Pluto’s largest moon, Charon, which is clearly darker than the dwarf planet. New Horizons will also image Charon, answering questions about its atmosphere and possible “interior ocean.”

Alan Stern, the principal investigator for the project, was not exactly understated in a NASA news release, noting “This is pure exploration; we’re going to turn points of light into a planet and a system of moons before your eyes!”

Indeed, the project has expanded significantly since it began in 2001 with the intention of exploring Pluto and Charon, which at the time was the only known moon of Pluto. Two more moons were discovered before the probe launched, with a further two discovered while it has been en route.

The plan is to capture so much data during the fly past that only around one percent will be sent back to Earth before New Horizons starts moving away from Pluto. The most important data will come back first, but it will take 16 months to transmit everything.

Top 10 Facts About ‘Futurama’

Futurama was an awesome show, and one that has a cult following that it truly deserves. But as much as us fans truly know about the show, there is a great deal we don’t, and finding stuff out only makes our love for it stronger. Here are 10 cool facts about Futurama you may not have known.

Turn Songs into 3D-Printed Sculptures You Can ‘Listen To’ with Reify

reify-1

The benefits of 3D printing are almost too impressive and massive for us to even properly address yet. The possibilities with this tech is limitless, and the directions it is going show great promise. But here is an angle you probably have never heard before, literally.

Remember how the Winamp player would make cool visualizations of your music based on highs and lows and frequency? Well, a company called Reify plans on doing the same thing, only using a 3D printer so you can actually print out how the song would “look.” That’s not even the craziest part:

Reify is also creating software that allows you to ‘scan’ the sculptures with your phone to interpret them back into audio. It’s not clear from their concept video if the music is recognizable, but that’s probably not the point. These sound sculptures seem to be more about visual presentation than media like vinyl or a phonograph.

So how cool is that? Listenable, 3D printed sculptures. My mind instantly wonders what Radiohead songs are going to look like. Probably complex galaxies. This is what “Ride of the Valkyries” looks like, 3D-printed, just to give you an idea.

‘Ant Man’ and the Greatest Moment From Any Trailer Ever

antmangif

Can we talk about this moment from the Ant Man trailer for a second? When Thomas the cheeky train from England runs over Yellow-Jacket? The Ant Man trailer itself was a surprising shock of awesome, but that final moment? I think it is safe to say we may be looking at this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and I am totally on-board with that. Get it, a train pun?

Seriously, though, I could watch this gif forever. This movie already reeks of win.

6 Things To Consider When Spending Your Paycheck On A ‘Star Trek’ Tricorder

tric1

So it finally happened. A proper tricorder from Star Trek has been replicated and made purchasable by the public. This means Star Trek nerds who have been waiting ages for this can now die content, but considerably poorer. You see, this is no toy. No, this is a replica that is about as spot-on as any fan could want. But with that, come a a hefty price tag. Topless Robot has some things to say before you plunk down all your weekly earnings:

The painful truth is that authentic props, particularly of the sci-fi variety, do not look in reality like anything you saw on screen. The Roddenberry Mark IX is made of metal, weighs as much as a small cat, and flips open to display a brilliant sound and light show captured right from the show, all for $499.95.

The real thing is available as well if you’re willing to hunt. The same model Tricorder, screen-used from an episode of Voyager, was listed on eBay at the time of my research. At a glance they look identical, even down to the images on the display, but with a construction out of resin, no function whatsoever, inkjet printed graphics and a starting bid of $3000, it’s easy to see why people would be more inclined to reach for the replica.

So though the call my be strong, be cautious. This is no minor investment (but if it is something you adore, well worth it).
