A look at the 2015 edition of the Steampunk World’s fair, which took place in New Jersey, USA between May 15-17, 2015.

Welcome to The Steampunk World’s Fair! We are the largest Steampunk festival in the world, but our core is not about size – it’s about being a warm, welcoming place. We take one crazy weekend in May and make it a home to music, entertainment, joy, and thousands of people. Some are Steampunk veterans, some are brand new; some are really seriously, some are really silly, some are sure and some are just curious. We welcome you all!

Snoke: Andy Serkis’ ‘Star Wars’ Character Name Revealed

snoke

His name is Snoke.

His name is Snoke.

His name is Snoke.

Supreme Leader Snoke, to be exact.

That is all we know about Andy Serkis’ new character from Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. That and the mo-cap pic we have above. But from LOTR to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes to King Kong and his varied video game work, we ALL know no one can do mo-cap like Andy Serkis. I have a strong feeling this character might just be incredibly badass.

I have a feeling many of you have that feeling, too. Some call it ‘the force.’

Fourth ‘Human Ancestor’ Species Found

lucycousin

Researchers working in Ethiopia have detailed what they believe to be a newly-discovered ancestor species of humans. It means as many as four such species, known as hominins, could have coexisted.

The results, published in Nature, are from analysis of 14 teeth and jaw bones discovered beween 2006 and 2013. The bones appear to come from four individuals and date to somewhere between 3.3 million and 3.5 million years ago. The biggest signs the bones are from a previously undiscovered species are that the jaws are particularly robust and the teeth, particularly the canines, much smaller than in other hominins. That may suggest a differing diet.

The researchers have dubbed the species Australopithecus deyiremeda, which translates as “close relative” in the local language of the Afar region where the discovery was made.

The BBC notes this follows on from discoveries of Australopithecus afarensis (the most famous example of which was known colloquially as Lucy) just 35 km away in the same Afar region, Kenyanthropus platyops in Kenya and Australopithecus bahrelghazali in Chad. The researchers say there’s now “incontrovertible evidence to show that multiple hominins existed contemporanously in eastern Africa”.

The discovery casts further doubt on previous theories that Australopithecus afarensis was a straightforward and sole “ancestor” of humans. It also raises questions about whether any of the four species may have encountered one another and, if so, whether they pooled their collective skills and physical advantages.

‘Suicide Squad’ Rumored To Be (Expletive Deleted) Insane

squad

So right now, most geeks have their eyes turned towards Suicide Squad. Great cast, great characters, and the look of the movie has people intrigued (not all happy, not all mad, but intrigued). Good news for fans of the Suicide Squad waiting to hear ANYTHING about the title. Seems the movie is moving along, the cast is bonding, and the film itself is said to be bonkers in the best ways by one of its stars, Cara Delevingne.

Via Uproxx:

“I’m not the biggest fan of superhero films. There are so (bleeping) many. I love the Batmans but some of them I’m not that keen on. I’ve never been so excited to see a film and I’m actually in it. I wish I could tell you about it at all. The movie is going to be the best thing in the world. The camaraderie on set is insane.”

So there you have it from The Enchantress herself. Maybe she is just smitten because this is her first flick. Or maybe she is right, and we are set to get an over-the-top, mind blowing ride we are all praying to get. This is a good sign for the latter. More news as it comes.

Tender = Tinder and the Modern Dating Scene in a Nutshell [Video]

To comment on the current dating “market,” four students from Leiden University created “Tender,” an art installation that uses a piece of meat to “swipe right” automatically on a simulated version of the Tinder dating app. Yep, it seems that this is what the “meat market” is all about these days.

The 27 Best ‘Batman’ Artists

oftdzmmrddd3yqauams0

If you were to look back on the Batman comics and all the stellar artists who have given their own personal touches to the caped crusader, you would see he has a laundry list of some of the most talented people in the industry at his back. From Jim Lee to Tim Sale, every artist had their own style to Batman, and no one was any better or worse than the other. Some made Batman darker, more ripped, angrier. Some made him look more like a character, bigger and larger than life. And even some chose to stick with his golden age roots and keep him campy and classy. The wonderful thing is, there is no right or wrong. It all comes down to YOUR favorite visual representation of the hero.

Kotaku assembled a great list of which artists really made the hero shine:

About Paul Pope:

With the rough-edged cyberpunk and Japanese manga signifiers abounding in Pope’s work, the sweaty, volatile sensibility found in works like Batman Year 100 return the character to the pulpy tone of his fictional forebears.

I, for one, was a big Frank Quietly guy. He just made Batman look and feel like a real person, and no one has been able to replicate that since. Although, huge props to Capullo for his New 52 run. Faceless Joker was insane, and he breathed some real life into that book.

See, told you, impossible to pick one. Thank God Kotaku helped.

(Helllloooo, Nurse!)

But what may surprise you is that Pratt loves him some Fireball Whisky. So at the end of his photo shoot, he was kind enough to offer tidbits on how to act, in between consuming an entire bottle of Fireball.

Enjoy, and you’re welcome.
