Titan, Batman, And Star Wars, Oh My: The Best Week Of Trailers Ever

s

If you are a geek, which you probably are because you are on this site right now, you must still be catching your breath from all the awesome nerd trailers last week. In as long as I have lived my geek life, there has never been a week where as many amazing, geektastic trailers were released in a single week. Seriously. We had superheroes and Jedi and Titans and Terminators. Hell, we even had another Jurassic Park trailer drop and astound us. Rather than sit here and drool excitedly, how about we address each one individually? I will start off with the one that has me the most excited, even though we will be waiting the longest for it.

Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

Not sure if they planned on releasing this last week, but my personal opinion is, the hype from the Star Wars trailer was at an insane high, and they decided to drop their trailer and take some of that thunder (which, they did IMHO). I will be honest, I wasn’t sure how they would set up the premise of Batman battling Superman, but this trailer did an astounding job of setting up the plot of the movie we have all been speculating about so much.

From how dark it looks to how shockingly good Batman’s (non-armored) suit looks, you can tell this movie is going to be badass with a capital Batman. Though little has been seen of Affleck’s Batman, that trailer shut a good deal of haters up, myself included. Now let’s just hope the actual movie will be as good as the trailer.

Attack on Titan (Trailer 2)

I know a great many of you know how sick, twisted and awesome this anime is, but many Americans have never even heard about Attack on Titan, and just how much of a cultural phenomenon it is overseas. For those unknowing, it is based off an anime of the same name and is exactly what it looks like. There are some titans and they are massive and like to eat people’s heads off, and the people learn how to fight back and try to fend them off.

It’s balls-to-the-wall and batcrap insane, and this trailer seems to capture that magic perfectly.

Terminator: Genisys

I will be honest, I am on the fence about this one. Hell, even the title misspelling drives me nuts. This series has gotten worse and worse, and I cannot help but think the massive plot twist they revealed in the new trailer that dropped last week gave away WAY too much of the important aspects of the film. That twist would’ve floored audiences had they not seen it coming. But now we have and meh.

For those who missed it, SPOILER ALERT, John Connor is bad now and trying to go back in time and kill his own mother to keep himself from being born. Yeah, sounds a little shark jumpy to me. Still will see the crap out of it, though.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

If you grew up in the 70’s or 80’s and do not get chills from this trailer, you must have lost your soul somewhere along the way. For Star Wars fans, this looks like the movie we have been clamoring for since Empire. From the use of iconic imagery (the dusty, rotted helmet of Darth Vader as one example) to the final line, with Chewie standing with Han on the Falcon, it is exactly what most of us nerds prayed a new Star Wars would look like.

What’s up with that one storm trooper who looks just like Kevin Hart, though?

 Jurassic World

I will admit, huge Chris Pratt fan, but this is the only other one on the list I have some slight hesitancy towards. From the trained raptors who fight for good, to the same exact “giant dinosaur crashing into glass with two kids screaming underneath it” gag, it just has some red flags is all I am saying.

BUT, it is still a movie about dinosaurs eating people, so I will probably see it five times or so. Just expressing some minor nerd concerns is all. And anyone who pulls the “raptors were incredibly smart and probably could be trained” card, save it. I know. I will reserve full judgement until I see the film. Regardless, as with most of the awe-inspiring trailers on this list, this one has me drooling, too.

So which trailer from last week most blew your geek minds? Take to our comments and let us know!

What Do We Think About ‘Batman vs. Superman’s’ Big Three Superhero Costumes?

sup

So now that the trailer has leaked and we have seen some of what the new Batman vs. Superman has to offer, what do we think of the superhero costumes in the movie? Kotaku posted this shot not too long ago. Personally, had no problem with Supes’ outfit in Man of Steel. Batman’s suit looks more real and organic than it has in any other movie, and Wonder Woman looks badass.

Slowly, my hopes for this film are rising much like the Dark Knight himself once did.

First Details on ‘Stars Wars’ Anthology Spinoff: Rogue One

garethrogue1

Not sure if you heard the news this past weekend, but there is some big buzz already about the next Star Wars movie after the one coming this year. The reason for this buzz has a bit to do with some people involved. If you have seen either The Raid movies, you know why you should be excited at this point about Rogue One.

Finally confirming the rumors, director Gareth Edwards announced that this will indeed be about the mission to steal the Death Star plans – and it’s set in a universe where there are believed to be no Jedi left. “God’s not coming to save you.”

Realism is important – he wants this to feel like a real war movie set in the Star Wars universe. To that end, he has the cinematographer of Zero Dark Thirty and special effects guys from Black Hawk Down andSaving Private Ryan. He said that while Star Wars is quite black-and-white in terms of good and evil, Rogue One will show the gray area that becomes polarized. Good guys are bad, bad guys are good – it’s like the reality of war.

So much like Empire Strikes Back, we should expect this movie to be dark and troubling, which has me beyond excited. I always wanted a Star Wars that went that step further when it came to some of the darker stuff, and it looks like we just might get it with Rogue One.

Drug-Buying Bot Freed By Police

drugbot

A computer that automatically bought illegal drugs online has been released from custody by Swiss law enforcement officials. The computer ran an automated bot called ‘Random Darknet Shopper’ as part of an art project.

The artists behind the project had programmed the bot to search for illicit materials on darknet sites. That’s a loosely defined term that’s commonly used to refer to sites that can only be reached over anonymous, peer-to-peer connections. In this case, the artists were specifically targeting sites that act as marketplaces for people wanting to buy and sell goods in a way that’s difficult to trace.

Whenever the bot finds a target product at the right price, it places an order and pays in Bitcoin. It has a weekly budget of $100 of Bitcoins and chooses one product at random to track down each week.

The goods, including untaxed cigarettes, counterfeit Nike trainers, and masterkeys, then went to the artists who put them on display along with the bot (or rather the computer that housed and ran it.)

Swiss officials seized the computer in January along with a collection of the items on display. That prompted the artists to publicly ponder the philosophical issues about whether a bot can commit a crime and face the consequences (and presumably privately ponder the practical issue that they might be prosecuted themselves.)

The officials have now returned the computer with the software intact. They’ve also returned all of the purchased items except for 10 ecstasy tablets that have now been destroyed. It appears that while purchasing and transporting many of the items may have been illegal (in either Switzerland or the seller’s country), the drugs may have been the only item that is illegal to simply possess. Switzerland classes ecstasy as a “soft” drug for which supply and possession is illegal but rarely leads to a heavy penalty.
