This Kinetic Insect Lamp is the Most Beautiful Thing You’ll See Today [Pics + Video]

Korean artist U-Ram Choe uses resin, magnets, electric motors, CPU boards, and LEDs to create these amazing kinetic lamp/sculptures that are based on the morphology of insects. When switched on, the creatures light up and start gently moving. Beautiful.

Just Cause 3: Firestarter Trailer

The Just Cause series of video games are beautiful, massive sandboxes where the players are left free to roam and essentially cause as much wide spread mayhem as they can. As you can see from this Just Cause 3 trailer, the insanity meter is about to crank about as high as it can go.

It’s like life finally letting you play that Michael Bay movie you always wanted to play.

Inflatable Cat Gives Small Dog The Scare of His Life [VIDEO]

Cats and dogs have a very strange relationship. Though dogs are often bigger and stronger, some will see a cat and pretty much lose their minds. That, my friends, is exactly what happens here when this adorable dog going for a stroll notices a massive, inflatable, black cat, poised as if it’s ready to strike.

Due to the cat’s size here, this reaction is completely rational, though. Pretty sure that dog thought it was going to be eaten for a split second.

The Amazing Zines That Kicked Off Geekdom

zine

A great many people think geekdom itself was spawned directly from science fiction films and comic books, but believe it or not, the true roots of geekdom go deeper and further than that. There were often indie ‘zines’ put out by local writers and artists to try and get their work featured and exposed to more people. A man named Lenny Kaye (who played guitar in Patti Smith’s band) put together a book collecting some of these zines called  The Tattooed Dragon Meets the Wolfman. Wired had him share some thoughts on the movement and his book:

Despite being produced with a limited tool set, and existing in a vastly different milieu, these hacked-together pamphlets laid the groundwork for modern day fandoms. “The most surprising thing I noticed about the zines was how closely the format—editorials, letters, essays, reviews—paralleled the format of blogs,” says co-author Jack Womack. “All this stuff is proto-blog, proto-Instagram, proto-snark, proto-troll, and naturally, also an active exchange of ideas that motivated some very weird people to do great things in their life,” adds co-author Johan Kugelberg

So essentially, blogs (like the one you are reading this instant) probably would not exist (and modern geekdom as we know it) were it not for these indie zines being thrown together by passionate artist and writers and editors so many years ago.

And to think, some of us didn’t even know these things existed.

We Are Closer Than Ever to Birth Control for Men

bcm

You knew it was just a matter of time. Women have to carry the babies and give birth and take birth control, and us guys do little in the whole process. Truth is, we get to do the fun part, and all the awful parts get delegated to the female. Well, that is about to change. Wired has a great piece today about how we are scientifically very close to the point when there will be birth control that men can take. Seems only fair, right? Birth control for men seems a long overdue invention.

There are essentially two different forms of birth control  for men being developed, and both work very differently from one another. There is JQ1 which sort of tricks the body into forgetting how to create sperm (sounds scary) and then there is H2-Gamendazole, which keeps sperm from reaching maturity. Both are basically sperm manipulators, but if they work, who can argue?

Just curious to see the list of side-effects when these ‘babies’ do hit the market.

Another ‘Game of Thrones’ Mix CD Coming Out (This Time Featuring Snoop!)

throner

Not sure if any of you recall, but last year, HBO worked out a deal with some rappers and had them drop a mix tape based around Game of Thrones. For the uber-geeks who don’t know what a mix tape is, it is basically an underground album, in this case, with all songs being based around the fantasy series GOT. It was a smart (albeit quite contrived) viral business move, but one that seemed to work as they are repeating it. This time they have thrown some rock bands in for good measure (which makes sense because rockers LOVE singing about high fantasy. No really).

From Flavorwire:

Catch the Throne: The Mixtape, Vol. 2. HBO has announced it’ll be releasing this follow-up to last year’s mixtape in March, and that it’ll feature Snoop Dogg and Method Man, as well as metal acts Anthrax and Killswitch Engage, all cohered by a thematic focus on George RR Martin’s series’ titular elements; some might say, in fact, that these are all actual “song[s] of ice and fire.” All fifteen songs will feature samples from the Season 4 soundtrack.

I had to cover this story for a different site last year when it dropped, and my thoughts have not changed. There is something inherently hilarious about hardcore rappers who claim they came from the streets spitting rhymes about ‘the Mother of Dragons.’ That being said, it is also kind of awesome in a campy way, so really, you can’t even be mad. Plus the inclusion of some metal acts seems a step in the right direction. Now how about Tyrion releasing an album of spoken word poetry? We’d be all over that.
