Everything Wrong with ‘John Carter’ in 15 Minutes or Less

Though they tried their best to adapt the classic novel, the John Carter film just did not meet up to the hype, nor was able to make back the massive budget they spent on the movie (which is rumored to be in the $200 million range). Thankfully, the folks at Cinema Sins decided to go over this movie thoroughly in 15 minutes so you don’t have to in three hours.

How A Tweet Turned Into One of the Best Multiplayer Game in Years

tweet

The name of the game is #IDARB, and you either know how this magical game was born into this world or you don’t. Though upon first glance, it may look like just another fun, frantic indie game, there is much more going on here. This game was created like a Mad-Lib, with many creators and designers collaborating with open source software. When you play the end result and learn how much fun it is, it makes the whole thing more remarkable. I call it Smash Bros on meth, but that’s just me. The most insane thing is, this game would not exist without Twitter.

Wired has a great piece deeply exploring the origins of this amazing game by designer Mike Mika and any fan of gaming owes it to themselves to read this story and see that anything is possible if you toss out just the right tweet to just the right people at just the right time.

In the 13 months since Mika sent that first tweet, #IDARB has become a chaotic, competitive multiplayer game that calls to mind Super Smash Bros. and basketball if you played them while shaking cans of soda and rickrolling friends.

The premise is simple: Two teams of up to four players apiece score points by shooting a ball into a goal. But the execution—a frenetic combobulation of crazy ideas that’s as fun to watch as it is to play—is brilliant.

This is #IDARB. It’s available now for the Xbox One. And it is unlike anything you’ve ever played.

Makes you wonder what else gaming has in store for us. More so than gaming, what the true geniuses and fans behind it have in store for us in the coming years.

8 Ways to Go to Hell According to Videogames

Warning: Language.

Hell may not seem a very inviting place (for those who believe in it), but the idea of getting to fight your way out of it is nothing new to gamers. Here are 8 ways you can go to hell in gaming (and murder your way out of it, which oddly, seems like it would be the perfect reason to keep you there, based solely on spiritual morality.)

They say hell has better company, anyway. Just make sure to bring a shotgun.

Absurdly Awesome: An In-Depth Look Back at the Turkish ‘Flash Gordon’

Many of us who grew up in the seventies and eighties were big Flash Gordon fans. The movie was hokey and silly and out-there (literally), but that is what made it just a blast. What is insane to discover is that the Flash Gordon was actually second out of the box (and the seemingly less absurd of the two, which is also unfathomable). An insane Turkish version came first. The real irony here is that both ripped off the former glory of space pirate (or whatever we call these kinds of dudes), Buck Rogers.

Keep watching, it only gets more interesting from there.

Rare Fox Spotted In Yosemite For First Time in One Hundred Years

fox

A very rare breed of fox that hasn’t been seen in the wilds around Yosemite park for a century recently made a jaw dropping (yet oddly casual) reappearance, sparking much excitement for lovers of this stunning creature who feared its time was all but done.

From i09:

“We are thrilled to hear about the sighting of the Sierra Nevada red fox, one of the most rare and elusive animals in the Sierra Nevada,” stated Don Neubacher, Yosemite National Park Superintendent, in a statement issued by the National Park Service.

Nice to filter in a little good news here and there, when it seems lately all the web is throwing at people are pranks and disguised advertisements.

Man Deals With Breakup By Artistically Taking His Ex Out of His Life Using Photoshop

ex

Breakups suck. That is something most people can universally agree upon. In our current world of social media it is even worse because, often, we wear our relationships on our sleeves through the photos and statuses we share. One man named Matthew Swarts had a bad breakup recently and found moving on difficult, so he came up with an idea to exorcise his last girlfriend from his life, artistically speaking.

From Wired:

To process the strong, often conflicting emotions that come with these changes, Swart is working on two photo series. In Beth, he manipulates old photos of his ex-girlfriend so she slowly fades from view. In The Alternatives, he manipulates images of his new girlfriend to represent the complicated process of forging a new bond.

“The photos became a way of dealing with loss and the psychological state that I was working through in the new relationship,” he says.

We’ve all done it, but we just use scissors or just crop the photo online. What artist Matthew Swarts did was accept that his former love still exited, but not in a way in which HE could see her anymore. It is profound work, as well as a poignant statement on the acceptance of loss and moving on.

Ten Mind-Shattering Facts About Time

Time is an illusion put forth to control how we spend our days and ensure we do them as efficiently as possible. Or time is a unit of measurement, in the same way inches are a unit of measurement. Truth is, time is a mystery to us, even though we pretend we have a grasp and control over it. This video will prove to you we have much left to learn about time, even on an individual level.
