Gamer Facebook Timeline Covers

So (almost) everyone is pretty much used to the fact that Facebook has rejigged our profiles into the Timeline format and you must now choose a photo to place as your cover photo. Pictures of friends, family, flowers and random cupcakes all float across peopleโ€™s timelines โ€“ usually with some awkward Facebook cropping.

But there are those who saw an opportunity to maximise sexy geekiness and created some funky geeky timeline covers and even GaS has created a set of awesome covers that you can use.

Well now Venture Beat are giving gamers a series of their own so that they can swath their profiles in their own brand of geekiness.

Theyโ€™re releasing a whole new set every day this week โ€“ at the time of writing they havenโ€™t yet released the 8/16-bit ones (due Wednesday!) and Iโ€™m looking forward to those!

Below is a collection of a few of my favourites โ€“ check out their post here to see the full set!

Six New Dark Knight Rises Movie Posters [Pics]

With just under two months until the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise, six new promo posters have been released. Three of them are branded with the foreboding tag line of “The Legend Ends” which has many fans speculating that Bruce Wayne’s alter-ego will meet his ultimate demise at the end of the franchise. If you’ve read the comics, you know exactly what happens to Bats at the end of the Knightfall storyline (or click the link to find out).

These posters, however, are making me all the more excited for this film!

Guitar Teacher? โ€“ Thereโ€™s an app for that.

Will the guitar teachers soon be replaced by the Apple gizmo? The people at Incident, running the gTar Kickstarter campaign are hoping so. Or, at least, they want to create a guitar that anyone can play.

It basically involves docking in your iPhone and letting you play by pressing the frets that light up and show you where to do so. Thereโ€™s also a โ€œfree playโ€ mode, where you can play it like a regular guitar โ€“ but with a variety of instruments and effects available. Kinda like a keyboard version of the guitar! Thereโ€™s also what Iโ€™m calling Baby mode where you just play the string without pressing the frets โ€“ itโ€™s like easy on Guitar Hero โ€“ booring.

Hereโ€™s a video introducing and explaining the gTar:

To me, this seems pretty cool. Itโ€™s like a funky way to get the app-obsessed back out of the cyber realm and into the real world to toy with physical things once again. And, you have to admit, learning the guitar can be really challenging and if this helps, then why not right?

Unfortunately, $350 pledges have been sold out. You can still pledge $399 or more, however, to get a white gTar โ€“ which will eventually retail for $449. Theyโ€™ve already blown through their goal of $100,000 so youโ€™re pretty much guaranteed at this point a shiny gTar โ€“ and theyโ€™ve estimated that you could get it as early as Sep 2012.

What do you think? Terrible bastardisation of music, or pretty funky gadget?

Leonard Nimoy’s 2012 Boston University Fine Arts Convocation Address

Leonard Nimoy has recently retired from acting and public appearances, but when asked if he would give the Fine Arts Convocation address at Boston University last week, he didnโ€™t hesitate to agree.

He gets the Star Trek gags out of the way fast and then rises above them to give a very heartfelt speech to the graduating class of Boston University’s Fine Arts program. Much of Mr Nimoyโ€™s life he spent honing his craft before taking his iconic role of Mr Spock. He had this to say about his life path growing up in Boston:

“My folks came to the United States as Immigrants โ€“ aliens. They became citizens. I was born in Boston a citizen. Then I went to Hollywood and I became an Alien.”

He shares exactly what Spock meant to him and how he found his passion. He discovered acting very young and aspired to share a message with his art. He makes a beautiful tale about how Spock means a lot to him and relates to his own personal story.

He also ties in with how students should follow their passions in order to achieve their true potential, just like he did when he was younger, which led him to a career in Hollywood.

โ€œYou are the creators, and curators of your own lives. You create your own life and your own work. Give us your best. Give us the best of your art. We crave it. We hunger for it. Help us to see ourselves, to know ourselves. Illuminate our lives. Keep in mind what Victor Hugo said, โ€œPopularity is the crumbs of greatnessโ€ And please, please, for the sake of our culture, for the sake of mankind, donโ€™t create any more reality TV shows!โ€

Nimoy is a charming man, a serious class act and very funny guy, heartfelt honesty with a smile. After listening to his address, there was no irony or gag when he came full circle and wished these grads, โ€œLive Long and Prosper.โ€

Adam Savage Rocks Out to ArcAttack’s Massive Musical Tesla Coils @ Bay Area Maker Faire [Video]

Last Sunday during Bay Area Maker Faire, my pal Brian Boyko, who used to write for Geeks are Sexy, caught Adam Savage on tape rocking out inside a faraday cage to ArcAttack’s massive musical tesla coils. Needless to say, Adam and ArcAttack’s act completely electrified the audience. Check it out!

Thanks Brian!

Edit: And here’s some footage from another angle:

Unique Designer Shoes For A Brave Sole

As I had warned in a previous post, I DO love shoes!

But at least these creative shoes by Jeffrey Campbell actually exist.

Though, how one would walk in these, I do not know. Calling Lady Gaga!
