Space gets a true universal dock

Computing has the USB cable. Analog audio visual equipment (in Europe at least) has the SCART lead. High definition has the HDMI cable. And now the International Space Station has its own standard plug/socket combo.

Five international space agencies have agreed a standard for the docking system used when spacecrafts dock in space stations. While there may still be international competition when it comes to space missions, those involved say the move was necessary to allow “emerging international cooperative space missions.”

The agencies also noted that the standard will mean it’s now possible to embark on international crew rescue missions if needed. You can see their point: if you’re stuck on a space station, you don’t exactly want to be turning a “foreign” rescue craft away because it won’t dock without one hell of a roll of duct tape to hold it in place.

The standard is the work of the International Space Station Multilateral Coordination Board, which is made up of representatives from space agencies in Russia, Japan, Canada, Europe as a whole, and NASA.

As part of the agreement, agencies will continue to be allowed to design spacecraft however they see fit, as long as the docking system is compatible with the standard.

Docking system compatibility is slightly more complicated in space than on Earth. For example, when you push a USB plug into a computer socket, it slots in relatively easily because the computer is too heavy to be pushed out of position. In a zero-gravity situation, objects can easily move continuously in any of the three dimensions; there’s also no friction to hold them in place.

The international standard also confirms the “androgynous” design as official. That’s a reference to the usual design of socketry as either male or female (think of plugs and sockets in terms of human gender differences if you don’t get the reference.) The standard — which stems from a compromise introduced in the early 1970s between Russian and American designs — means that both docks contain raised “petals” that slot together a little like the grooves of a screw-cap lid and the neck of a plastic bottle.

The Evolution Of The Geek

When one hears the word geek, images are conjured of pocket protectors and nightstands made out of old comic books. That old notion of geek-dom has since evolved into a new, tech-savy, and dare we say, cool geek.

Another Tablet Has Landed: Samsung Galaxy Tab Available from Verizon November 11

While the iPad has been the mover and the shaker of the tablet world since its launch, there have been many rumors and unanswered questions about other tablets entering the market. Some have come and gone with little fanfare, others have been but speculation. Now, Samsung’s Android-based Galaxy Tab is hoping to rise to the challenge of the iPad, launching this November 11 through Verizon for a purported $600. (Which makes the whole iPad/Verizon announcement seem a little odd in comparison, doesn’t it?)

Although the reviews aren’t in yet, as this was just announced, CNETโ€”of courseโ€”is already fiddling with it. Their early impressions are that the Galaxy Tab, at a smaller 7″ display, is significantly easier to hold than the iPad, making reading a more enjoyable and booklike experience. However, the web browsing isn’t in the same realm as the iPad, and has plenty of room for improvement.

The Galaxy Tab has an extensive (advertisement-heavy) website, purporting its amazing capabilities set to a hipster soundtrackโ€”of course, what else?โ€”so you can see for yourself. Here’s what their ad copy has to say about what the Galaxy Tab has to offer:

Why did Samsung make a 7โ€ Tabletโ€”because weโ€™re into mobility and know that people are looking for compact communication and entertainment devices they can slip in their pocket and bring on the go. The GALAXY Tab is always connected, lightweight and smart. Its exceptional screen is designed for reading books and magazines, watching movies and playing games. The GALAXY Tab tablet builds on the rich content experience provided by the Galaxy S line of Android smart phones.

Any of you out there tempted? Personally, the price seems a little hefty to me, considering the smaller size. But that’s also without seeing it. My experiences so far with the iPad have been decent, but not exactly world-altering (as some people I know believe). I like the smaller size of the Galaxy Tab, and while it certainly took its aesthetic right out of the Apple handbook, I think it’s got promise.

Let us know what you think about the Galaxy Tab–is this something you see yourself purchasing any time soon? Is this an iPad killer? Or is the tablet war a losing battle for anyone who’s not Apple?

Google Employees: It Gets Better

You’ve probably heard about the “It Gets Better” project, a YouTube campaign aimed at giving a message of hope to GLBT youth. There are a huge number of videos now, many at the itgetsbetterproject channel, including from a number from public figures like celebrities and politicians.

This latest is from Google employees, and I think it illuminates a related point: that no matter what you’re getting bullied for, whether it’s sexual orientation or being a geek/nerd, it really does get better. High school can be a tough time for anyone who’s different, but I bet a lot of geeks here can attest that it’s worth holding out for college.

LEDs Get Thinner, Implanted: Geeks Everywhere Ponder the Implications

Pictured above: those are LEDs. On the tip of a pencil. Yep, in this article io9 talks LEDs–thin, bright, flexible LEDs that are so slight they can be slipped under paper, on pencil tips, and, well, under your skin. Just imagine the possibilities.

John Rogers of the University of Illinois is the brain behind this bright new advance in LEDs. Says io9:

He and his team have put tiny LEDs, each one smaller than the tip of a pen, on flexible electronic sheets. These sheets can be stretched and twisted up to 720 degrees without any loss in LED function, and they can hold up under soapy water or even underneath the skin, which they demonstrated by implant one sheet under the skin of mice.

My first thought? Oh crap, those Avatar-obsessed people are going to finally get their skin to glow blue in patterns.
