Four Games Join Video Game Hall Of Fame

Final Fantasy 7, John Madden Football, Tomb Raider and Spacewar! are this year’s entries to the World Video Game Hall of Fame.

The titles join the 15 previous entrants since the hall was created in 2015. It’s administered and housed in The Strong, a Rochester, New York facility that describes itself as the national museum of play. The four titles were chosen by a panel of games history experts, journalists and scholars from a longlist of public nominations.

Spacewar! is perhaps a surprise choice given it was never commercially released, but it’s certainly got historical merit. It was created at MIT in 1962 and is believed to be the first video game that was distributed to other computers rather than solely played on the machine upon which its code was written. It involves two ships in an aerial dogfight with the twist that it is set near a star’s gravity well and thus the ships are constantly moving. It was a direct influence on later commercial arcade and home console games, most notably Asteroids.

Detailing the other inductees, the hall cited several historical elements of the Madden series including having the game treat each player as an individual, affecting the broadcast style of real football, and creating the genre of the annual sports game franchise (though some gamers might question that as a positive.)

In the Tomb Raider induction the hall cited the game’s appeal to hardcore and casual gamers alike, noting Lara Croft as arguably the most famous female video game character while acknowledging controversy over her early physical appearance.

Final Fantasy VII earned praise for marrying technical achievements with storyline and for bringing Japanese-style RPGs to international mainstream audiences.

The titles already in the Hall are:

  • Donkey Kong (inducted in 2017)
  • DOOM (2015)
  • GTA III (2016)
  • Halo: Combat Evolved (2017)

Heathrow Airport Celebrates Star Wars Day

As May the 4th dawned at Heathrow, the departure screen changed at the airport to pay homage to Star Wars day. As you can see above, flights have been delayed on Hoth because of snow on the runway, the flight to Kashyyyk is numbered WOOK1E, and Flight LE1A to Alderaan has been cancelled. There’s a lot more going on in the picture above! Check it out!

May The Fourth Be With You: Happy Star Wars Day!

fourth

I don’t want to stereotype here and say that all geeks are excited about today, but I’m willing to bet that a fair number of you have May 4th marked on the calendar, just like Grandma’s birthday and that long-awaited game release. (Half-Life 3, anyone? Sigh.)

For those of you who have a smartphone, there’s a lot of  Star Wars-themed mobile wallpapers on Pinterest. I’m pretty sure you’ll find one for your device over there!

If you want to make some Star Wars cookies or pop cakes today, here are two quick tutorials:

If you find your lack of SW knowledge disturbing, why not head to Wookieepedia and brush up on trivia? (Related: TIL that Saadoon-Kauldi was a Force-sensitive Kadri’Ra slave who was freed by members of the Twi’lek Badawzi family and eventually became a spice-dealing crime lord. The more you know, even if it’s not canon anymore.)

Get lightsaber finger tattoos! Because WHY NOT.

And if you find yourself in need of some recruits for your Star Wars-themed activities, try some of these propaganda posters.

We’ve also featured some rather sexy ones on [GAS] in the past as well.

However you spend the day, have a good one. And May the Fourth be with you.
