Sony Unveils the Much-Rumored Vaio P, World’s Lightest 8-inch Netbook!

Is this thang cool, or what? At only 1.4 lbs, the Sony Vaio P certainly won’t break your arm—or the bank: although quite a bit more at $900 than the standard, generic, commodity-priced netbooks from everyone else. Even then, it is still considerably lower-priced than the diminutive UMPCs it probably should be lumped with, as it’s about the size of a business-class envelope, and about as thin as a cell phone. Boasting an 8″ XBrite-ECO screen with a whopping 1600 x 768 resolution (that’s HD territory, folks, if not full HD), Vista, 3G broadband, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth, real-time GPS functionality, and a 1.33 Ghz Atom processor with 2GB of RAM, this thing looks like a keeper…as long as you don’t lose it, of course! Video after the jump.

  1. Oooh shiney. I just bought a laptop but I’m drooling for this one now. Guess I’ll have to save up and get it in a few years, ha!

It’s amazing how tiny it is! Luckily I have small hands but people who don’t would have a really hard time with that I think.

  3. That is pretty much proof that Apple is missing out a major market, not that it was obvious anyway.

People WOULD pay up to $1,000 for one if it was as stylish as that Vaio – the $900 usual cost, plus another $100 premium for the Appleness and the OS.

  5. I wrote the original blurb, so, if you don’t mind my chipping-back-in on the whole “Appleness” thang, here goes(man I’ve been wanting to say this for like, a decade or three! Why now, why the wait? Dunno, this thing’s just bringin’ it out, lol: I’d say Mac’s are always terrrrrrrifically compelling from a design perspective, relative to anything else from anybody that’s comin’ off boats to our shores, at launch…add in the OS? (I’m a PC guy) and thats a relative +5, +6, +7….meter takes some time, it;s an old meter, get it?
(If not, picture a Morgan Freeman Saying it to Christian Bales, slowly, and you’ll get it: ‘Plus five, plus six, plus seven…” Oh, crap, forget it , if you don’t get it! Point being, it gorws on one, slowly. The build quality is GREAT! And, you feel that, every time you touch it…but you remember in the back of your mind (as with the new MacPro, just announced) that th battery is non-removable; the SW is relatively limited (um, that means NO games to to tempt the video card with…but it is “industrial design heaven.”

This Sony “P”? Man, it seems to get a lot ‘o’ things right: the KB apparently is O.K. (I’m NOT a big fan of the concept/design, as the usability suffers, in my hands, on all the small VAIO kit, so, ignore my prejudice in favor of checking out!)

I’m a huge fan of the form-factor, i.e. call it a third the size of a 10″ netbook!? Well, less than half the size, anyway! Busiess-class envelope, you say? Well, a tiny bit larger than such (maybe 1/8″ on every edge/side…so, no biggie; o-it won’t

  6. Wow. I’m the world’s worst “fast typist,” eh?

    Forgive me, please!

    Thx.

    CES takes it’s toll…

I’m not even sure of my thoughts!
