Wi-Fi Now Available on Your Wrist

A pair of cufflinks that conceals a USB drive was once considered the geekiest way possible to jazz up your dress shirt. That’s no longer the case.

If you’ve got $250 burning a hole in your pocket, you can now buy an even geekier pair of cufflinks. As with previous designs, one link opens up to reveal a 2GB USB drive. But the other pops open to reveal a USB-connected Wi-Fi hotspot.

Note that this isn’t a wireless dongle in the sense of either a receiver for a wireless network, or for receiving a 3G signal. Instead the dongle takes the internet connection from the computer it’s plugged into and then shares it wirelessly. This means it’s only really of use in specific “emergencies”, namely cases where you’ve got a computer with a wired connection but need wireless access.

The Wi-Fi hotspot appears to require special software to be on the host computer, though of course you can carry the file about on the other cufflink’s USB storage. The software does likely mean you can’t use the cufflinks for wireless tethering on a USB-enabled phone.

These are hardly the only geeky cufflinks on the market of course. For example, one company released a pair of Facebook-themed links with the Like button and the (sadly not yet real) Dislike button.

Personally I’m still holding out for a set of cufflinks made from old-school typewriter keys with my initials. And yes, friends and family reading this, this is a hint.

Indiana Jones Custom Engagement Ring!

A man known only as Homerliwag on Reddit revealed a very unique wedding ring and proposal to his Indiana Jones-obsessed fiance to be.

Starting with an elaborate Indiana Jones themed proposal, Homerliwag gave his beloved…. a bag of sand.

TheMarySue quotes the designer and fiance:

It was about 2 or 3 days before November, 11, 2011 (11.11.11). My girlfriend Aimee was wanting to do something special that day. So, I decided to look for an engagement ring. 11.11.11 happened and I had no ring. What should I do?! Being that Aimee is an avid Indiana Jones fan, I decided to surprise her with a ring box. When she opened the box, inside wasn’t an engagement ring – Just a bag of sand! I told her, Indiana Jones must have swooped in and stolen the “treasure” and left her with a bag of sand (just like the movie).

Being a designer and artist, I felt I had to do something special. Since Aimee is a very enthusiastic Indiana Jones fan, the thought of a coiled whip as the ring seemed perfect. I did a few quick drawings and found a custom jeweler in Las Vegas. The “bag of sand” bought me some time to have the ring custom made. And with her favorite color yellow, I selected a fancy yellow diamond which also represents “The Idol”.

Check out the concept art he gave the jeweler:

After pulling off this one of a kind proposal and a brilliantly unique engagement ring, I’d have that framed and hung next to the wedding pictures.

Presuming he doesn’t rip her heart out and lower her into lava in an elaborate Temple of Doom sacrifice-themed wedding.

Five ’90s Comic Book Movies Primed For a Reboot

This list over at Gamma Squad is pretty good.  “The Rocketeer” was an amazing movie, and I’d love to see what could be done with the concept with a huge budget.  Something I’d never considered before, though: Dick Tracy.  Yes.  Get some weird, dark-minded director, a Nicolas Winding Refn or some other David Lynch-type to really bring out the bizarre in the thing.  That could really work.  Full list here.

The Importance of Defending our Freedom to Share

What does a bill like PIPA/SOPA mean to our shareable world? At the TED offices, Clay Shirky delivers a proper manifesto — a call to defend our freedom to create, discuss, link and share, rather than passively consume.

Community College For Gifted Mutants

Community is the funniest show on TV.  Or was, maybe.  I don’t know.  Anyway, it also is the inspiration for some great fan art.  But the coolest that I’ve seen, so far, is this rad “Xavier’s Community College For Gifted Mutants” piece by Aviv Or.  Brilliant!
