Longtime [GAS] reader E. Foley has recently earned a few attribute points on her knitting skill tree by completing this Nyan Cat hat with toaster pastry earwarmers.
This pattern features Chunky Mochi Rainbow yarn, Rowan Drift (for the cat), and Knit Picks Palette for the toaster pastries. You’ll need size 10.5 needles (circular or double pointed) and size 2 needles (circular or straight). It’s easy enough for a beginner knitter! Fun and fast for an experienced one!
If you want to try your hand at making one, E. is selling the pattern for just $5 right here.

Yesterday we reported several Apple policy changes that appeared to show the company on the back foot. But today the company has had some good news from both analysts and courts.
After CEO Tim Cook made an address this week that referred to the rapid take-up of devices such as the iPhone in comparison to Apple’s more traditional computers, Horace Dediu of analyst firm Asymco had a thought, reached for his pocket calculator, and came out with an amazingly telling statistic:
Apple sold more iOS devices (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch) in 2011 than it has sold Macs in the computer’s 28 year history, by a margin of 156 million to 122 million.
Meanwhile Apple has won a court verdict against Motorola in Germany for violating a patent on the familiar “slide to unlock” feature on phone handsets. It’s the first time Apple has won a patent victory against Motorola, and may also strengthen its case against other Android manufacturers.
Motorola believes that changes made to its unlocking feature since the case began are sufficient that even with the loss, it won’t have to pull phones from store shelves or face delays in future production.
The court postponed a ruling on a second Apple patent, covering the swipe feature for flicking through photos in a gallery.
In what appears to be coincidental timing, Patently Apple reports that Google (which is in the midst of taking over Motorola) has filed a patent on two unlock techniques for smartphones. One involves swiping while the other involves voice controls; the key to both is that they allow the user to both unlock the phone and carry out a particular action with a single command.
Even what looks on the surface to be bad news for Apple is getting a positive spin today. BestBuy appears to have removed the Apple TV box from both its website and its store inventory. However, there’s already speculation that move could be laying the path for either a new model, or even a full-blown Apple television set that would take over the Apple TV brand name.

Just over a week ago I posted about the masterminds behind the now classic Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle games. They recently made a plea to the public,(via Kickstarter ) hoping to fund an old school text click adventure puzzle game.
They gambled that if they brought their idea for a game of this style to a major publisher that they would be laughed at, so they turned the question back on what they hoped was a still present fanbase on the market. I guess they did know that a fanbase was out there, but I am not sure they knew it was this rabid.
The goal on their Kickstarter page was $400,000. This would cover production of the game, and filming of a documentary about the process.
As of this posting, Double Fine Adventure has 56,807 people behind them with a total pledge of $1.9million dollars. This is nearly five times the original target!
The excess of funds will go right back into the game. It is now being offered on more platforms (PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android!) as well as being translated into French, Italian, German and Spanish. They also said the extra cash is going to improve the quality of the documentary as they can now purchase an original soundtrack and production value.
I find this to be an amazing story of fanbase support. What makes it even MORE amazing is that the game premise has not even been announced! Just that it would be in the same style of Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle. Whatever new characters or worlds they create; clearly their fans will be just fine with it.
I can’t wait for the game to come out. My pledge means I get a copy and get to see the documentary too!
The chefs at Chicago’s Alinea Restaurant have created this somewhat unconventional helium filled “delicacy” to please their client’s palates. Unfortunately, there’s no indication on how much they charge for these balloons in the video, but I’m pretty sure they must be fairly expensive considering the nature of the dessert.

After watching this, I realized that letting George R.R. Martin (A Song of Fire and Ice) read bedtime stories to your kids might not be the best idea in the world.
