Which States Like Which Shows? [Pic]

statebystate

Location-based site Homesnacks has put together this map of, well, it’s not quite clear…

The site captioned the pic “What Show Each State Streams The Most” and the description specifically references Netflix viewing. However, it also reveals the underlying data comes from Google Trends, so this seems to be based on search activity rather than specific viewing. It’s also notable that no show is repeated (which seems unlikely), so it seems more likely to be a measure of shows that are disproportionately searched in a state for rather than a raw ranking.

Either way, there’s an intriguing mix of the readily explainable (Portlandia in Oregon) and the not so clear connections.

Tomato-Feeding Robot Is… Odd

We used to dream of robots serving us drinks and cleaning our houses, but putting tomatoes in our mouths? Well, that’s just what Tomatan does.

While there’s some minorly impressive technology (manipulating a tomato without crushing it), it seems of limited use. The makers say it could be useful for runners who want to get a nutrient hit without fiddling around with a backpack. The problem is that Tomatan weighs 18 pounds so appears to only be useful for a middle-distance run. For marathon runners there’s a three-pound mini version, though that works by firing tomato along a feeding tube rather than taking Tomatan’s gentler approach.

Electric Skateboard Approaches 60mph

Daredevil Mischo Erban has set a new world record for using an electric skateboard, hitting 59.55 miles per hour over a 100 meter distance. The “electric longboard” uses two batteries and has individual motors for each wheel, with the motors based on those from an early 1990s hard drive.

Terrifying as the ride must have been, it may not have been Erban’s biggest challenge as he previously topped 80 mph on a conventional unpowered skateboard, albeit going downhill on a road with an 18% gradient.

DoD Invites You To Hack The Pentagon

pentagon

The Department of Defense has challenged computer experts to hack the Pentagon. However, you’ll have to register first or face serious consequences.

The idea is to run a more crowdsourced versions of programs where businesses and government agencies ask “white hat” hackers to test their cyberdefenses. Whereas those often involve a flat fee, the DoD wants to use competition to spark efforts by multiple people. It’s not yet decided whether to offer cash prizes or simply let people compete for bragging rights.

As you’d hope, it’s not a complete free-for-all. The invitation will only cover a particular DoD computer system, to be chosen later on, which won’t cover the most sensitive data.

The contest will only be open to US citizens, and participants must pass a background test before being given permission to take part.

An unnamed official told Reuters that “The goal is not to compromise any aspect of our critical systems, but to still challenge our cybersecurity in a new and innovative way.”

WANT: The Walking Dead Coloring Book for Adults

walkingdeadbook

While most of the “trend” for adult coloring books has been centered on relaxation, the same can’t be said for the latest volume, covering The Walking Dead:

Featuring fan-favorite characters, including Rick, Daryl, and Michonne; locations like Woodbury, Alexandria, and the prison; and hordes of flesh-chomping walkers, this coloring book offers a wealth of gloriously gory designs to color.

My money’s on the red pen running out first.

Man Builds Amazingly Complex Musical Marble Machine [Video]

Martin Molin of the band Wintergatan has spent 14 months constructing this hand-operated machine which plays music using around 2,000 marbles. The machine combines a vibraphone (from the same musical family as the xylopohone), a few percussion instruments including a cymbal, and bass guitar neck (though that has to be played by hand.)

1,000 Foot High Glass Slide Coming To LA

The US Bank Tower in Los Angeles is getting a new way to travel from the 70th to 69th floors: an outdoor slide made of four inch-thick glass. The 36-foot long slide is illustrated in these design documents for a forthcoming redevelopment including an observation deck. You’ll feel the terror in your pocket as well as your stomach however: the slide is expected to cost $8 on top of the $25 fee for visiting the deck.
