Missing Footage Still Missing On Rogue One Disks

Missing footage from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story won’t be showing up in the initial disk releases. There’s no sign of deleted scenes in the wealth of bonus material, despite the original trailers having footage that wasn’t in the movie.

The release on April 4 has DVD, Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray versions. There’ll also be a range of streaming and download versions, some of which will be available on March 24.

The disks will come with a range of bonus features, highlights of which include a series of Easter eggs based on the connection between Rogue One and the other Star Wars movies, and a piece on the challenges of giving the film a fresh look while remaining true to the original Star Wars universe.

What isn’t mentioned anywhere in the publicity is deleted scenes. That’s something of a surprise given the trailer had shots that aren’t in the movie.

Director Gareth Edwards has previously explained that such footage came from a process where the crew spent an hour each day shooting “random shit” that wasn’t in the script in case it produced anything useful. He said some of that footage was iconic enough to include in trailers even though it wasn’t part of the story and thus didn’t make the final cut. While that sounded a stretch, the lack of deleted scenes suggests it might actually have been true.

Those still holding out for the “missing” footage still have a couple of sources of hope. One is that Target, Best Buy and Walmart are all getting exclusive edition box sets. While with Best Buy and Walmart it’s just a case of different packaging, the Target version is listed as having “DVD exclusive content – 2 additional bonus features.”

There’s also the possibility some of the extra footage will turn up in the inevitable re-releases, whether that be anniversary editions in years to come, 4K editions, or a 10-movie saga collection.

Candy Color Sorting Machine

A Dutch inventor has created a machine that automatically sorts M&Ms and Skittles by color. It cost around $500 to make, though Willem Pennings says it was well worth that for the learning experience.

The machine is based on an Arduino controller, with various 3D printed parts and, most importantly, an RGB sensor.

It sorts at a rate of two pieces a second, meaning a standard sized bag takes around two to three minutes to sort. The basic mechanism and controls could be easily adjusted to work with other colored objects as long as they are all roughly the same size and shape, and that the shape is regular.

Pennings goes into intricate detail on his website about how he constructed the machine. He notes that while the basic mechanics are straightforward, one of the main engineering problems was avoiding the distribution tubes becoming clogged with candy, something he solved by making sure the unsorted candy is constantly mixed.

The machine includes variable color LED strips which light the appropriate color both to show the sorting process is working and as a novelty to show what color the most recently sorted piece was. Pennings says the machine had to be constructed in a particular fashion to avoid these lights being seen by the RGB sensor and causing a feedback loop that led to mistaken sorting.

Trivial as the machine might seem to anyone who isn’t disproportionately pleased by such neatness, it might have a practical purpose. Van Halen infamously had a “no brown M&Ms” clause in their venue rider which is often cited as an example of rock star pettiness. In fact it was deliberately placed there to test whether the venue had read the rider in full and was thus paying suitable attention to the safety requirements of the band’s staging and electrical requirements.
