Young PS4 Users Get Mini Controller

Sony has licensed a mini PS4 gamepad for children who struggle with the full-size controller. The Mini Wired Gamepad is 40 percent smaller than the standard DualShock 4.

The “Mini Wired Gamepad, produced by Hori, is a single curved rectangle rather than the inverted bunny ears of the standard controller. Sony says that makes it easier to hold with smaller hands.

At $29.99. it’s definitely a budget model with some limitations. All the standard buttons are there, but without the touchpad. Sony says “certain touch pad inputs” can be simulated with the sticks, but hasn’t detailed exactly how this will work. There is a small button in the middle of the controller that resembles the touchpad, so one possibility is that tapping this while using a stick would simulate touching a general area of the touchpad.

Other missing features include vibration, motion sensing, the headphone jack, the speaker and the light bar. As the name implies, it connects via a 10 foot cable with no wireless option.

Sony says only that the controller is compatible with “most games.” Digital Trends notes that one of the exceptions for child players would be Tearaway Unfolded, which relies on the light bar and the motion control.
