I think its pretty damn creative whether they bought a second 'merely for the gimmick' or not. It's really cute and will make the recipient smile, that is worth making a trip to return the extra later, or it could have been a joint gift for 2 people.
If they only open one and keep the receipt they can return the other one. Or maybe the scanned and copied the cover art and put it in the sleeve of an old game.
