Brute Force ATM Attack

The security gurus among you will probably assume that we’re talking about cracking into an ATM via some kind of custom hardware and software solution here (à la John Connor.) But no, in this case, brute force truly means brute force. Check it out:

  1. Since when has armed robbery been geeky or sexy?

This site has gone downhill recently, yesterday it was cruelty to cats, today armed robbery…

I look forward to seeing what trash you gather from the depths of the Internets tomorrow.

    • This was picked by geek sites all over the blogosphere Andy, and several took it from here.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but we removed the cat video not long after publishing it, as it was indeed a bad move from us to post it.. but I don't agree with you about this video.

I'm pretty sure computer security people will find this pretty funny, or maybe I'm mistaken? Anyone cares to let us know their thoughts?

  3. I don't know what the cat video is referring to – I imagine it might have been posted and taken down before I had a chance to catch it; but I'm going to say that this video of a massively hard to pull off plan of sheer direct-route solution certainly is [GAS] worthy.

It's entertaining as hell, and while robbery and vandalism isn't something to crow about, certainly, the scope of the plan is unexpected.

Now, these are really dumb criminals – I think a detective MIGHT get a few identifying details out of this video footage – so they're probably going to be arrested. We're not rooting for them. Even so, no one got physically hurt, so if you do feel like rooting for the crooks (and there's a long tradition of doing exactly that, from Robin Hood to John Dillinger) it's not a moral failing, in my eyes.

And yes, I do think there is some geek aspects here – especially in computer security. If you secure something in an impenetrable box, sometimes 20 crazy crooks will get together and steal the box.

  5. I quite like this video, to be honest. But I can see why some could find it objectional if they're gonna be semantic that every post was meant to be especially geeky and/or sexy.

Although this is a little controversial, it's nothing that wouldn't be on the news. However, the cat video was more along the lines of it not being on the daytime news and having a newsreader warn people on the evening news that the video is distressing, which isn't how [GaS] initally presented it, instead choosing to post it as a joke video.

This time, they made it clear it isn't all just a joke (my main issue with the cat video) and that this is a serious, violent attack that's almost real-life unknowingly mocking the art of bad puns.

I think there's been some bad content recently, but nowhere near as bad as other blogs. It's been going a long time and sometimes has to resort to filler content (as we all do now and then) that doesn't necessarily focus on the site's main subject. There's still a lot of kick-ass stuff posted on this blog, so it's hardly going downhill.

    • Agreed. It's not like the cat was harmed… it was mildly inconvenienced. My cats have acted nearly as badly just getting a regular bath by hand (though with a lot more bleeding on my part). ;)

  7. How much money is in an ATM? Because if you have to split the loot with 20 other people, at some point, it doesn't seem worth it. Especially if you are not wearing a mask and you are walking right in front of the camera.

  9. In Greece they have performed these type of brute force attack with much fewer people. They used a tow truck ;-)

I can remember at least 3 in the last 3 years.

  11. Agree with Jordan – my impression was that there was a lot of equipment and people (many without balaclavas) for 2 ATM's, with how much in them to split?
