Ask [GAS]: What Old Game Do You Still Play?

The last time I moved (into an apartment that is, arguably, way too small to hold all of my stuff), someone asked me why on earth I still bother to have my Super Ninendo hooked up, nestled between my PS2 and Game Cube (no, I do not have any next-gen consoles, as I’m living off of student loans, but if anyone would like to take up a collection…). After all, it’s practically a relic; they stopped making games for it over ten years ago.

And even though it does have quite a bit, sentimental value isn’t my reason for keeping the console. I keep it because I have to be able to play Tetris Attack. Despite all of the games that I have played and loved since 1996, this is one that I cannot live without. There have been similar games over the years (the Pokemon-themed one for N64 was probably the closest), but none that quite match the gameplay and charm. It’s completely addictive. And? I rule at this game.

So what about you guys? Is there a console that you keep around just for a game or two? Do you have an emulator for your favorite oldie-but-goodie? Or with the new downloadable games, maybe you’re even lucky enough to be able to play it on your current console! I for one love that I can play original Zelda on my Game Cube. I don’t think I’ll be able to hold off on a Wii anymore if they release a version of Tetris Attack for it… especially if there was online play. Mmmm.

  1. I still have my original Gameboy (black and "white" screen, and see-through body) LOL.

I have to admit to original Tetris and Dr. Mario urges.

  3. I still have my original nes hooked up to my 60" tv. I love all the mario bros games and cant part with the console. Funny enough whenever people come over it is the first thing they see and the only thing they want to do.

  5. I still have my original Atari 2600 and about 300 games for it. I play it all the time with my kids – they love Asteroids. My favorite is still Circus Atari with the paddles.

  7. Nintendo just came out with Tetris Party for the Wii. I don't know if it does exactly what Tetris Attack did, but there is an online feature, I think.

  9. I play Dr Mario every day, I have an nes and snes emulator on my phone so when I'm on the move and I have some time to kill I always end up playing Dr Mario

  11. I've got my SNES hooked up to my TV right along with my PS2 and my Wii. I still play the oldies regularly. =3 Good old Kirby and Bomberman still rock.

Sadly I never did get a sega megadrive, but my gamecube means I can play the retro sega games. =3

  13. I am quite fond of Excite Bike and NES Zelda. Additionally, Settlers 2 and Chrono Trigger have stolen large portions of my recent life. Super Metroid is a strong contender as well.

  15. I got this huge urge to play Illusion of Gaia on the SNES. I was on a site for some videogame ringtones and I came across the mp3s for Illusion of Gaia. I went and hooked up my SNES to the big screen and started playing it all over again. MAN WAS IT GREAT!

  17. I still play a lot of old coin-op arcade games from the 80's and 90's via MAME

    I love them! I even have a X-Arcade dual controller :)

  19. I admit to still having a love affair with Super Mario 3. I play it all the time on my NES emulator for the pc.

  21. I'm a huge Doom and Heretic fan, and knew Duke Nukem 3D by heart. And playing the Final Fantasies VIII through X-2 made me wonder about the earlier ones. Then there were Jazz Jackrabbit, Earthworm Jim, and a few other games from my childhood I wanted to play again; and stuff like that kinda got the ball rolling and now I practically have every pre-2000 console emulated with a huge diversity of games. I almost never play modern games anymore, except for a select few; they don't appeal to me in the slightest.

  23. Recently I was playing “The Lost Vikings” SNES on my symbian :)

I can still remember me playing with two brothers changing controller than viking changes :)

  24. My boyfriend has his NES still. I demanded he hook it up so I can play some old Mario. I've been wanting to play some old school Mario and Zelda. I've seen the games played a million times over, but rarely was actually able to play them. My brothers were very possessive of all their stuff.

  25. I still keep my old super nintendo around to play around with super mario RPG and chrono trigger. They are such amazing games and I would never give them up. I play them each once a year and I've gotten all the endings on chrono trigger. I recently got Mario RPG on the virtual console, and chrono trigger on DS, but i love them on my good old SNES.

Oh and they released Pokemon Puzzle League (one of my favorite games of all time) on the Virtual Console on the wii. I looked up tetris attack on youtube and they are practically the same game. I love that game so much, and its the only video game i could ever get my dad to play with me.

  27. In the cabinet under my parent's tv, is the (original) NES shared by my sisters and I. Also, the Gun and the Power Pad! And my baby (now 24 year old) sister's Sesame Street Game Duo – Ernie's Magic Shapes/Astro Grover. Which I played for nostalgia's sake a few weeks ago.

  28. Hah…just yesterday I bought the Commander Keen pack on Steam out of a fit of nostalgia. I have to say that I still enjoy it quite a bit.

I'm an old platforming Junkie, so when I get the chance to play an awesome 2D platforming game, I jump at it. And all the best ones were made in the NES/SNES/Genesis era.

  29. I still rock an SNES, PSX (I'm posting this as I take a break from a speed run on final fantasy 9 to get excalibur II actually), Master System & a boatload of ROMs – I don't think games nowadays have as much replay value as priors. They just seem to be crapped out faster then anything else. Although there are a few that are just plain awesum in todays fecal fountain – mario bros wii, the recent call of duty, megaman 9 was an extremely welcome flashback & fat princess are pretty fun

  30. Super Baseball 2020, or as it's referred to on the SNES, 2020 Super Baseball… I originally had it for the Genesis, but lost it, so recently I downloaded the ZSNES and this was the FIRST game I got for it
