XP SP3 is out!

After being pulled out from Microsoft’s website because of “unforseen” compatibility problems last week, our friends from Redmond have made it available again today. Hurry up and get it while it’s fresh, or before it gets removed again!

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system.

    • Hmmm, If Microsoft has only corrected the bug with their Dynamic Retail Management System, no, if there's anything else, maybe!

In the end, I guess it depends on how many free time you have on your hands :)

  1. I installed it last night and now Windows won't boot. A message appears saying I should do a repair with the Windows Setup disk… if I had one. Sort of the problem with OEM recovery disks, no such thing as a Windows setup disk.

    • John, I had a boot issues after SP3 install, too. I was able to get around it by booting into DOS. If you can find a way to get to DOS and access your C: drive (or whatever drive windows is installed on)…

      cd system32

      ren gdi32.dll gdi32.old

      cd C:windowsservicepackfilesi386

      Copy gdi32.dll c:windowssystem32

You can recover the renamed gdi32.old if it ends up causing more problems.

Since there's too many ways for SP3 to go wrong, there's no guarantee that this will work for you, of course. Please don't blame me!

My scenario was that my PC would restart as soon as it started booting into Windows….and the loop would go on and on. After fixing the ol' gdi32 file, I was back in business.

If all else fails…err….torrent and burn an XP CD using a spare computer maybe? But only if you've still got the XP license sticker on your machine ;-)

  2. I am going to install this and test it on a virtual machine before I deploy it on any PC's whatsoever.
