Three-Part Homopolar Motor

A homopolar motor has a magnetic field along the axis of rotation and an electric current that at some point is not parallel to the magnetic field. The name homopolar refers to the absence of polarity change.

Homopolar motors necessarily have a single-turn coil, which limits them to very low voltages. This has restricted the practical application of this type of motor.

Ohhh Myyy! @GeorgeTakei’s Ringtone to Benefit Theater

Star Trek’s George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) has taken Twitter by storm–if you aren’t following him (and @DeathStarPR), get on the stick. Er, figuratively. Um, or literally, I guess. Just do it?

(Cue ringtone.)

The 1.50USD ringtone is a celebration of Mr. Sulu’s 100,000 followers on Twitter. All proceeds go to The Old Globe Theater in San Diego toward the production of Allegiance — A New American Musical. The play is a love/survival story set during the internment of the Japanese in the United States during WWII. According to The Old Globe site,

Allegiance sheds new light upon a dark chapter of American history. With its moving score, Allegiance connects the audience with universal themes of love, family and redemption.

As most Trek fans are probably aware, the young George Takei was sent with his family to an internment camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. From there, they were shuffled to other camps until the end of the war.

I’m So Cute I Made Spock Smile… Almost!

As you all know, unless you’ve recently joined us, my wife and I had our third child about 2 months ago. So as soon as I announced it to the world, with this oh so awesome post (seriously, do check it out, it’s one of the most geektastic things you’ll see today), my pal Alex at Neatorama sent me 2 awesome baby snapsuits, including the one you see below and this one as well. The reason why I waited until now to post about them is because the onesies only started fitting him just a few days ago. Thanks Alex! :)
