Google should vet every page, lawsuit claims

Google should check through every page it plans to list in its search engines and check they don’t contain any defamatory material. Or at least that’s what an international motor racing supremo says.

The individual is the head of the organization that runs the lucrative Formula 1 racing circuit. He made the headlines in 2008 for a series of legal battles against the News of the World tabloid newspaper for printing claims about his personal life. He failed in a bid to have the story banned before publication as a violation of human rights, but won damages in a post-publication case. The damages were for breach of privacy rather than defamation, with a later libel case in France failing.

Giving evidence to an inquiry in London about press standards, Mosley said the claims have been repeated across the Internet, along with a video billed as showing a personal and private incident, that appeared on the News of the World website; although the newspaper later took the video down, it had not been protected and was widely copied.

It was already known that Mosley’s lawyers had demanded Google remove hundreds of specific web pages repeating the allegations from its index, which Google has done. The legal fees for hunting down these sites and making the legal demands has already topped £500,000 (approx US $800,000.)

However, during his evidence, Mosley revealed that he is also taking the company to court in France and Germany demanding that it block any and all sites that contain the allegations. He’s also threatened to take the case to the United States.

Such a move would mean Google not only had to vet every site before it appeared in the index, but would have to continue monitoring the several billion sites in the index to make sure the defamatory material did not appear.

Google has responded by saying it has no control over what appears on websites. It says it will only remove pages that contain illegal material if and when court orders it to do so.

Science Round-Up: The End Is Nigh Edition

It sounds like a movie, maybe one with a foreign enemy and an Army medic who’s miraculously immune to the very disease that’s killing everyone. But this is no movie, and as of yet, there’s no way to know if there’s a living human who could combat the mutant H5N1 avian flu strain locked up in a Rotterdam medical facility. According to virologist Ron Fouchier of Erasmus Medical Center, this is “probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make.” That’s right: he said “make.” The virus is a genetically engineered strain of bird flu, one that’s particularly nasty and capable of mutating rapidly and efficiently. Even scarier, the virus is easily transmissible between ferrets, the animals that most closely mimic the human response to flu.

“I can’t think of another pathogenic organism that is as scary as this one,” says U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) Paul Keim, a microbial geneticist who has many years’ experience with anthrax in the laboratory. “I don’t think anthrax is scary at all compared to this.” And the scariest part of all? Dr. Fouchier wants to publish a paper detailing the virus’s modification and how it was accomplished.

So let’s recap: Researchers engineer the scariest pathogen ever known to mankind. It’s locked in a building, but if it weren’t we’d all die pretty much immediately. And they want to publish the process in scientific journals. What could possibly go wrong!? It’s not like bioterrorism might be a concern, or for the conspiracy theorists, a move by Big Pharma to sell more vaccines. And what of human error, the only universally constant threat to our survival? We’re just apes, guys.

As expected, the ensuing media frenzy has everyone up in arms (Geeks Are Sexy admittedly included), and perhaps justifiably so: We’ve seen this movie, and it ends unhappily.

A controversial new tactic to wipe out dengue fever has scientists debating over how–and if–a genetically modified mosquito should be released into diseased native mosquito populations. The GMO insects breed with the “real” ones, and the offspring die quickly because they refuse to feed, mate or fly. The population crash would dramatically reduce the spread of dengue fever in areas where funding for barrier methods (mosquito netting, still-water cleanup) is hard to procure. But there’s a problem: While one group of the modified bugs has been tested in cages in Mexico, another group was secretly released into wild populations. The consequences of introducing a new organism into an existing ecology are uncertain–but what happens when the new insect is a mutant? The potential for disaster is hard to calculate.

Robots to Police South Korean Prisons

Pay very close attention to how the prisoners here feel about being policed by robots.  It’s what we all have to look forward to when the robots take over.

A group of scientists has developed the robot warders under a one billion won ($850,000) project organised by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.

The robots — 1.5 metres (five feet) high and running on four wheels — will mostly be used at night.

They can connect prisoners with officers through a remote conversation function, according to a statement from the Asian Forum for Corrections (AFC), a South Korea-based group of researchers in criminality and prison policies.

It pioneered the project with the justice ministry’s cooperation.

The robots’ sensors will enable them to detect abnormalities such as suicidal behaviour and violence and report it to officers in charge, the statement said.
