Dr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog to Air on TV
I have been a Joss Whedon fan since Buffy, and he continues to prove himself a god amongst men. Most recently The Avengers earned him high accolades; but today I want to talk about a little project he did called Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog.
I am certain any reader of this site is intimately aware of this stand alone Whedon web project that was birthed from his quiet rebellion during the Writer’s Strike.
Now internet legend, and distributed on numerous content providers like Hulu and Netflix, Dr. Horrible will finally get the recognition it deserves. Television network CW will air the web series on October 9th, 2012.
Speculation online is all abuzz that CW is testing the waters for a potential Dr Horrible TV series, however I don’t think this is true or even possible. Whedon is still a little gun-shy about TV.
The elements that made the show an incredible success were the genuine charm of the main trio of characters. Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day are all very busy with their own projects, and while NPH might be the only real requirement to continue the story, I just don’t see it happening.
However on the other hand, musical shows are cropping up hoping to capture some of that Glee market. A continuing and expanding franchise in the world of Dr. Horrible could be fun.
The TV Premier may introduce more people to Dr. Horrible, which I think it deserves. But will most of the viewership be existing fans, or will fans of Fillion and NPH tune in to see this gem they didn’t know about?
Playstation Range Becomes Money-Loser
Sony’s game division has lost more than $45 million in three months. There’s a simple story behind it: sales of consoles and games are both markedly down.
The entire Sony group lost 24.6 billion yen (US $315 million) between April and June, despite an increase in sales across all product types. The losses were partly the result of unfavorable exchange rates.
That’s not a valid excuse when it comes to games however. PS3 console sales dropped from 3.2 million in the same period last year to 2.8 million, while combined sales of the PSP and Vita dropped from 1.8 million to 1.4 million. Considering the Vita only debuted earlier this year, the fact that Sony didn’t list specific sales for it may be a clue that it’s not been received well at all.
Games sales are also down by around seven million on consoles and one million on handhelds. That’s something of a consistent pattern across the industry, blamed mainly on a lack of new blockbuster titles.
Considering the PS3 has been available for well over five years, it may simply be that it’s starting to hit saturation point now. Aside from teenagers growing old enough to get it as a gift or buy it with their own earnings, you’d have to think most people who have any interest in buying the PS3 have already done so by now.
Sony’s only response — and even this is unconfirmed — appears to be producing a new series of “superslim” PS3s. Of the rumored models, only a potentially dirt cheap one that uses flash memory rather than a hard drive seems likely to help capture new buyers. Even then, a cut to a rumored $149 or so might not attract too many cheapskates given the price of games.
With the Move motion control system having failed to gain much traction, it still seems as if the only thing that will revitalise Sony’s gaming fortunes is the PS4 and that’s still looking to be an absolute minimum of 18 months away.
Toronto Silver Snail Moving Day
Silver Snail is an iconic Toronto Canada Geek landmark with a rich history and a must see comic shop for anyone visiting the Toronto area. Stepping past its incredible front window displays will bring you into one of the oldest Comic Shops in the culturally ecclectic Queen West district of downtown Toronto.
But these dusty shelves and historic location’s days are numbered. It’s not entirely a bad thing, nor is it the end of the Silver Snail.
The Silver Snail will be re-locating to a new modern and freshly renovated Yonge Street store mere blocks from Downtown Toronto’s Eaton Center.
Here is a peek at what is in store for the … store.
Now this is the interesting part. Moving this store is going to be a historical event for Comic Book geeks in Toronto and fans of the Snail in general. But this is where you get to help.
The idea is to have volunteers form a “bucket line” on Moving Day and they are calling for an army of comic fans to pass box after box from the old location to the new one. This distance is about a mile (1.6km) and participants in this event will earn themselves a Moving Day T-Shirt and get a voucher for 50% off ANYTHING at the new store.
The original date for the event has already passed, but with unexpected delays in construction, the date of this seemingly ridiculous effort is being pushed back to August 18th.
If you are in the Toronto Area, you can sign up for the event at Silver Snail .
At first I thought this was a ploy to reduce moving costs, but honestly I am not sure which will cost them less. They are giving some impressive discounts to all those involved as well as a free t-shirt. By rough estimates they will need about 800 – 1000 eager fans to make this bucket line possible. I think a moving company might be cheaper!
This is a great way to involve the fans of the store and supporters of the community, plus, it’s an event you won’t likely see repeated in the Downtown Toronto area anytime soon.
Yeah, it is sad to see the Snail leave its old location, but what a way to go!
Christopher Eccleston cast in Thor 2
It looks like Thor 2 has its big bad, and the face behind the new villain is none other than Dr. Who alum Christopher Eccleston. The man who brought the Who franchise back from its sixteen-year hiatus is in final talks to play Malekith the Accursed, ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim.
After the exciting news of the upcoming Marvel movies title screens at SDCC, we knew some underworld baddies would play a role in the new Thor film. Some speculated it would be the beginning of Ragnarok, with Surtur making his first appearance. That isn’t out of the question yet. If the film follows the books in any manner, expect to see the introduction of Balder, some God on Elf boot stomping, and the return of everyone’s favorite trickster.
Thor 2 is expected to hit theaters November 6, 2013.
