Looks like Netflix just scored the longest road in Hollywood. The streamer has officially secured the global rights to the legendary board game Catan, and it’s going all in! We’re talking movies, scripted and unscripted series, live-action and animation. Basically, Netflix is building an entertainment empire… one settlement at a time.
The projects will be produced by Darren Kyman (Asmodee), Pete Fenlon (Catan Studios), and Guido and Benjamin Teuber, sons of Catan inventor Klaus Teuber, alongside Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (The Lego Movie, Barbarian, It).
Since its creation in 1995, The Settlers of Catan has sold over 45 million copies worldwide and been translated into 40+ languages. For nearly three decades, it’s been the board game equivalent of diplomacy, capitalism, and betrayal, all rolled into one polite evening among friends. Now, it’s leveling up to screen size.
“As millions already enjoy Catan at the table, we’re thrilled to bring that world to life for fans old and new,” said Netflix’s Jinny Howe. And honestly, who wouldn’t tune in for a reality show where players try to survive on an island trading sheep for lumber under emotional duress?
Guido and Benjamin Teuber added, “Our father imagined a world where people would gather by trading, building, and settling together – both at the table and beyond it.”
So grab your bricks, your wheat, and your emotional resilience, because Catan is about to trade game night diplomacy for Netflix drama.
