XBOX ONE BUYERS BEWARE: 4chan Prank Has Users Bricking Their Consoles!

Gamer Guys and Gals, please be aware:

4chan’s /b/ forum — the same one that convinced lots of people to dunk their phones in water — has now promised new Xbox One users a way to “hack” their new gaming units so they will be backwards compatible.

INSTEAD, IT BRICKS THE CONSOLE, RENDERING IT INOPERABLE.

THERE IS NO WAY TO REVERSE IT.

IF YOU SEE THIS, PLEASE DO NOT DO IT:

    • While that sounds like a great idea (and it’s honestly one of the reasons I’m not buying an XBone anytime soon, given that I have 100 or more XB360 games), it’s likely not possible. The XBone is running a new operating system, probably an alternate version of Windows 8. PC gamers know all too well how various versions of Windows aren’t really compatible with each other, which is why there are special programs to try to run older Windows programs in new versions of Windows, with varying degrees of “success.” It’s entirely possibly that the XB360 used an OS and architecture that can’t be made compatible with the new system’s OS and architecture. They’d have to completely redo the XBone, not just add a patch to it, and that’s not really feasible at this point. (In fact, it might end up breaking the XBone games.)

    • No, they shouldn’t. Anyone who has any understanding of anything knows that backwards compatibility causes the potential of a console to plummet. It’ll just turn it into a slightly upgraded Xbox 360.

  1. Anyone who does something they found in an infographic on 4chan deserves what they get.

“But this guy seems totally legit! He’s Nigerian royalty! How can you not trust a prince?!”

  2. There would be a big cost increase; and stats on last-gen showed that although people *wanted* it, almost very few people actually put any significant time into any previous gen games. I’ll keep my old console for another year for the occasional old game if it keeps the price lower on the new ones.

  3. This kind of idiocy is a large portion of what’s wrong with the world today. Who, in their right mind, would put something like this out thinking it’s funny to cause anguish to others?

  4. /b/ strikes again. To be fair, what the **** are you doing with an xbox one if you want to play old games?
Wait, I mean what the **** are you doing with an xbox one?

  5. It’s more of an architecture problem than an OS problem. The 360 had IBM Power PC processors in it, and the new console does not – it uses a custom AMD 8-core processor. Since power PC is RISC based, and the AMD processor is x86 based, it would be exceedingly difficult to get good performance out of 360 games running in emulation.

  6. Why is it that when something bad happens, it’s always 4chan, but when something good happens, it’s always reddit or 9gag?
