Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves, The Last Samurai, FernGully… the story’s been done a million times, but who cares? It’s a good one, and in this case, it’s all about the eye candy, right?

If you are going to complain that all “Boy Meets Girl” movies are derivative, I will agree with your astute observation and classically honed taste while slowly moving towards the door.

  2. I saw this on Digg. I thought it was funny for a moment until I remembered Joseph Campbell, who says most stories use similar ideas in similar patterns in completely different settings. You could probably do it with thousands of other movies too.

    • Daniel McDougall says:

there are really only 7 basic story lines.. millions of stories but only 7 story lines quite interesting actually

  3. Jeff says:

Yes, there are only so many stories, but usually greater effort is made to hide the sources. In a word, bullseye!

  4. Jess says:

Meh, isn’t it something like there are all of three unique story plots in existence, and every story is just some derivative of them? The Lion King was basically Hamlet with animals singing with Elton John, but I still enjoyed the artistry of the movie.

Also, as the poster alludes to, no one’s really saying “OMG avatar’s story is so original I can’t believe it”, but relishing in the beauty of the visual experience that was the movie.

Nonetheless, this little essay thingy was a funny read :)

Sadly, I know of one person, I almost started crying the moment he said it, I was like: Dude, have you been living under a rock all your life…uhm, could u tell me the difference between pocahontas and avatar..
And of course, he had never watched pocahontas, again, living under a rock.
But back to reality, he actually thought that this was one of the most original stories/movies he had ever seen…

That was a fine day, hehe:D

Everyone knows Cameron is no real “creator”. He copied Terminator from Harlan Ellison, True Lies is a remake of a french movie, Titanic took its love story from a movie in the thirties…but so what? He’s got a vision like no other and he’s capable of creating universes that many envy. So, really, I couldn’t care less where he stole from this time. He’s far better than that looser Roland Emmerich.

  6. Jen says:

If you want visuals just skip the story and watch Discovery Planet’s Earth. Seriously, people. There is nothing wrong at criticizing his story arc while still admitting you liked the visual splendor of his animation. I hate Stephanie Myer’s Twilight story arc but still enjoy the guilty pleasure of the movies. That being said – the latter half of Avatar I hated. Let’s everyone feel like they are douche bags for being human! Yea!

  7. I was thinking more of Fern Gully (Minus Robin Williams as the bat).

  8. Daniel says:

Hehe, no matter what you comment here .. Effects are awesome, and .. seems that Avatar has break the 1 billion dollar barrier; so .. have fun discussing, the numbers speak for themselves

    Joy ! :)

  9. Eye candy didn’t do it for me, sorry.

  10. Bright says:

    @Daniel
Numbers really don’t mean anything. I will go watch Avatar not because someone in particular recommended it or because I’m certain it will be a good film, but just because it was advertised as the omg movie of the millennia. I was led to think it’s something you cannot miss, just like the landing on the moon. People watched that even though they were not interested in astronautics. At all.

  11. kadijs says:

i noe i was not the only one who saw this with in half of the movie i notice this lol

  12. thilan says:

what ever the story has to tell this movie has the best visual effects that any movie ever had!!!! HAIL AVATAR!! HAIL JAMES CAMERON!!! cuz his movies never get old!!! i still love the TERMINATOR and ALIENS!!! so our grandchildren’s children will speak about AVATAR in 2154 :)

  13. Dugoprsti says:

Well, it is a story that has been seen before (Dances With Wolves, Samurai. But a good and real one.
Btw, people in NATO countries see the same story on TV everyday, they just don’t think know that is it. Indians, colonisation of Africa, Australia, Far East of Asia, battle for unobtanium in arabian countries, battle for unobtanium in Balkan peninsula etc etc.

So, like in real life, there are stories that repeat themselves, and this one at least got some people to think about the environment. The next one would be thinking of the people that live there and why army is being sent.

—Ah! -the ever-corrupt, ever self-serving Boomer
    generation!

Cameron’s sure not looking any younger —and while
there’s still time he’d better start giving some
quality thought to breaking ranks and ‘outting’ his
and Hollywood’s decades of financial etc. ‘enmeshment’
with the most awesomely genocidal regime history has
EVER seen —across the Pacific. STONE COLD FACT

—Eternity is loooong time to be on the wrong side
    of things —isn’t it Jim?
