The Ad Placement From Hell

WARNING: This clip from the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica contains spoilers. If you follow the show and haven’t seen it yet (which is unlikely at this point), you may want to watch the entire episode at Hulu first.

You’ve seen unfortunate ad placements before, but you’ve never seen anything as unfortunate as this commercial break during Friday’s Battlestar Galactica. There are other words I could use besides “unfortunate”, such as shocking, disgusting, or hilarious, but I couldn’t decide between them.

OH MY GOD. that is so frickin’ hilarious. I just sprayed coffee all over my screen…

    That’s your fault miss.

  2. Anonymous says:

Holy frak I just about wet myself– how awful!

  3. JImmy Jjomes says:

OMG no way dude that is SO funny!

    RT

  4. Anonymous says:

…and that would be the definition of irony.

  5. brainstorm says:

    That ad is gruesome! :D

  6. mindH4cker says:

That was the funniest thing i sew in a while
    dude.. :)

  7. dave says:

Anonymous: no. That is nowhere near the definition of irony. That is a *coincidence*. Irony needs some kind of a CONTRADICTION, otherwise it’s just a coincidence.

I’m less horrified by the somewhat coincidental ad placement and more by the hideous acting in Battlestar Galactica. As somebody who tends to enjoy sci-fi I’ve been staying away from it in case I ever end up getting into it in the future, but at least now I know to avoid the living frack out of it for evermore. Thank you.

  8. Yodaddy says:

Am I a bad person for laughing my head off?

    (pun intended)

  9. Eric says:

Oh christ, I would have to say hilarious indeed! :D

  10. Woeful says:

Unfortunate is a good word… The KFC ad for hot wings was also “interesting.” Ads aside BSG is still one of the best shows on TV right now along with “Mad Men.” This episode blew my mind, not once but twice and rarely does any TV do that during an entire season let alone during one episode.

I’ve been trying to quell my expectations of the final 10 episodes because it’s nearly impossible for any series to maintain the quality of writing, acting, and overall cinematic experience for the long haul. I’m glad to write that I was wrong, BSG hasn’t lost a thing. I have high hopes for the final nine episodes! This consistency of quality is why the show has been universally praised by science fiction fans, critics, and people who generally don’t like science fiction at all. It’s a flat out fantastic drama that deals with contemporary issues from terrorism, and politics, to religion and torture.

    Well done!

  11. mistress public says:

This tv show is complete shit. stupid, vacant, and violent.

  12. pissonyou says:

the comments are approval edited. jerk.

  13. Brett says:

    OH FRACK LOL!

  14. compago says:

troubling. It’s not entertaining and it doesn’t teach anything. It’s not funny, it’s not art and completely tasteless.

For me, most importantly – it’s entirely un-necessary.

  15. Elmo says:

Sorry Mistress, we can’t all watch Gossip Girls.

  16. Chip says:

Tomato soup. That’s just what I was craving.

  17. Joel says:

I don’t get it. Well I do but not really.

  18. DUKE says:

Not a sci-fi buff so I’d have missed this. Thanx, Miss C. That is fabulous placement.Hilarious for the viewers, a winner for the manufacturer. Bet everyone remembers the product. I’ll certainly buy it! Not enough to make me actually watch that show tho’!!!

  19. Rusty H says:

Dave: “Irony needs some kind of a CONTRADICTION“

Showing a suicide and then a commercial with the song “I just want to celebrate another day of life” doesn’t provide enough contradiction for you?

  20. Juan José says:

    R O F L M A O !!!!!!!!!!

Best placement for an ad EVER!

  21. krymsen says:

    That was Hilarious!
Would have even been better if it was only bowls of dark red “tomato” soup exploding all over walls.
    :-P

  22. James says:

I endured that horrible show for what seemed an eternity for *that*. My god, words fail to explain how empty your lives must be to consider that noteworthy.

  23. Frak Pak says:

Out here on Time Warner in Calif., we had an equally bad segue into a chipper KFC ‘Frak Pak’ ad. Anyone else get that one?

  24. misfit says:

well that is why I watched on on demand [comcast] so while they deliberately made the little conan promo is as the standard break, they also deceptively made them short and immediately cut back to the show.

…hence, they know we fast forward.

now as to the broadcast on friday night, the premiere as it were, suckas!

  25. LinuxBox says:

I just peed myself. That was so wrong AND so great at the same time.

  26. Michael says:

“That is nowhere near the definition of irony. That is a *coincidence*. Irony needs some kind of a CONTRADICTION, otherwise it’s just a coincidence.”

The contradiction lies in the rock song playing in the background: “I just want to celebrate…another day of life”

  27. meatwad3030 says:

    i don’t get it.

  28. meatwad3030 says:

oh and BG is the single worst show ever to be produced.
it makes star trek enterprise look like a goldmine

  29. Joe says:

That was funny, but I was expecting a recruiting pitch for the Army.

  30. Nell says:

I stepped away after this to grab some cereal for a snack and missed the commercial. OMG! This is hysterical. Do not watch this at work. They look at you funny. Lol.

  31. Scott-O says:

    HILARIOUS!!!! thanks!

  32. Gunther says:

Funny at so many levels. Nevermind the exploding soup- what about the “I just want to celebrate another day of living” lyrics after a suicide? Too friggin funny!

  33. Matt says:

You say it was the season premier, it was actually not the first episode… it was just the first part of the second half of season 4.

  34. cinattra says:

Thanks is just fucking sweet!!!! Let the hilarity ensue!!!!

  35. iskandra says:

Whoah, that was bloody awful (every pun totally intended) and I vacillated between LOL’ing and gasping from shock.

  36. mepersonally says:

This is funny as hell. Ironic, coincidental, horrifying and wonderful all at the same time.

What I find more horrifying are some of these comments. For whatever reason I read through all of them. The world has some stupid people in it, and I don’t understand what makes them decide to express their stupidity. Read a book, watch a film, do something else with your time- Why get on here and talk about how crappy of a show this is, or the definition between ironic and coincidence? Get lives, for frak’s sake.

And BSG is one of the greater television shows to be produced in the last ten years. Fantasic stuff all the way around, from almost every angle.

Thank you to whoever caught this, and went through the trouble of posting it. Frak you, to those folks who made me hate the human race that much more as I read moronic comments.

    • Evad says:

… and so you decided to add to it by going on a rant longer than most of the so-called “moronic” comments here?

There’s so much irony, I can’t take it!

  37. ninjela says:

    AMAZING!!!

  38. Joe says:

Looks like Google removed the clip due to a copyright claim by NBC. Interesting… I saw this video when it first came out and it was used as commentary and only a small portion of the Battlestar Galactica clip was to demonstrate the irony with the soup commercial following. For Google (or the owner) to remove it because of a “copyright claim” is just silly… There was probably pressure from Campbells. – Joe
