It's basically the classic ACME Black Hole, made famous by the good Mr. Wile E. Coyote of Looney Tunes fame. Very creative stuff.
I think they can read. This is why they knew that it was called a portable black hole. However, they also knew enough science to know that isn't a black hole. Learn to understand.
