“Can I play Elden Ring with it?” is the new “Will it run Doom?” The latest in a string of unconventional input devices is a player who completed the game using an electric piano.
“Omunchkin13” used the Bome MIDI Translator software to remap the piano keys to represent computer keyboard keys. While there’s certainly some logic to the approach, the player noted “ I guess I didn’t think it would be too different from using a normal controller. And I couldn’t have been more wrong.”
The challenge wasn’t made any easier by using a free version of the software which cut off after 20 minutes, forcing a restart, during which no input was possible. That proved sub-optimal when the 20 minutes hit mid-fight.
It appears to be the first successful playthrough of the entire game (with all non-optional bosses) with an unconventional input. However, other have won specific boss battles with wacky controllers. One took a similar MIDI approach but with strings on a harp rather than piano keys. Another replaced a PS5 controller with inputs triggered by pressing on 12 bananas.
It’s enough to make a player who used a modified Fisher Price toy game controller look positively conventional.
