My first computer was a VIC 20, and a few years later, I got a PC that was running DOS. Yes, I’m that old. Needless to say, the text-based interface of most computers back then was far from user friendly. Then, Windows 3.1 came along and turned the world of PCs into a much friendlier place. But Microsoft’s “magical” user interface based on the “start” button we all know only debuted 25 years ago today, on August 24, 1995. For those of you who are craving a little nostalgia, here is the OS’s launch video along with its iconic startup sound. I’ve also added some footage featuring Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer dancing on the stage during the launch.
