As with most card games such as Pokémon or Magic: The Gathering, some of the cards you get from buying decks can gain value over time. A Black Lotus card from Magic: The Gathering was sold on ebay for $166,000 earlier this year, and now, a Pokéman card was purchased at an auction in New York for $195,000.
The card is a rare ‘Illustrator’ card that was given as a prize to 39 contest winners in Japan in 1997 and 1998, and features Pikachu (drawn by his creator Atsuko Nishida) on the front and has a paintbrush icon in its lower right. Some believe that only 10 of these card remain in existence today.
This is now officially the most expensive Pokémon card ever sold and is valued almost 4 times the price paid for the last Pikachu Illustrator card to hit auction back in 2013, which sold for $54,970.
