Google is adding high-dynamic range (HDR) movies to its Play Store. They’ll only work on compatible TV sets and carry the same eyewatering cost as 4K videos on the service.
HDR isn’t about resolution, but rather increased contrast (with more detail visible in very dark or bright scenes) and a bigger color range, both of which theoretically make for a more likelike picture. There’s an argument that it makes a bigger difference than the 1080-4K leap on anything but the largest TV screens.
To date most HDR content has been among original programming from Amazon and Netflix. Google is now selling 40 HDR movies on Google Play in the US and Canada, mainly a mix of animated movies and action blockbusters. As with 4K titles, the price tag is $29.99. Yes, thirty bucks.
They’ll work on some high end smartphones, though Google is pushing casting as the best way to watch them, either through the Chromecast Ultra or to the few HDR sets which have a built in Chromecast receiver.
