Missing Footage Still Missing On Rogue One Disks

Missing footage from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story won’t be showing up in the initial disk releases. There’s no sign of deleted scenes in the wealth of bonus material, despite the original trailers having footage that wasn’t in the movie.

The release on April 4 has DVD, Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray versions. There’ll also be a range of streaming and download versions, some of which will be available on March 24.

The disks will come with a range of bonus features, highlights of which include a series of Easter eggs based on the connection between Rogue One and the other Star Wars movies, and a piece on the challenges of giving the film a fresh look while remaining true to the original Star Wars universe.

What isn’t mentioned anywhere in the publicity is deleted scenes. That’s something of a surprise given the trailer had shots that aren’t in the movie.

Director Gareth Edwards has previously explained that such footage came from a process where the crew spent an hour each day shooting “random shit” that wasn’t in the script in case it produced anything useful. He said some of that footage was iconic enough to include in trailers even though it wasn’t part of the story and thus didn’t make the final cut. While that sounded a stretch, the lack of deleted scenes suggests it might actually have been true.

Those still holding out for the “missing” footage still have a couple of sources of hope. One is that Target, Best Buy and Walmart are all getting exclusive edition box sets. While with Best Buy and Walmart it’s just a case of different packaging, the Target version is listed as having “DVD exclusive content – 2 additional bonus features.”

There’s also the possibility some of the extra footage will turn up in the inevitable re-releases, whether that be anniversary editions in years to come, 4K editions, or a 10-movie saga collection.
