LET’S DANCE: David Bowie to Pen Musical Based on “The Man Who Fell to Earth”

David Bowie may soon be conquering Broadway.

Bowie, along with Tony Award-winner Enda Walsh (Once), is creating a new musical entitled Lazarus, based on the 1976 movie The Man Who Fell to Earth.

(Yup. This show’s gonna be weird.)

According to IMDB, the film, which stars Bowie and Rip Torn, centers on a humanoid alien named Thomas Newton who visits Earth to obtain water for his dying home planet. He starts a tech company in order to obtain the billions he needs to return home, but “[h]e does not count on the greed and ruthlessness of business here on Earth.” Meanwhile, a girl named Mary-Lou falls in love with him.

Lazarus will feature both old and new Bowie songs, with Walsh writing the script.

The musical plans to be part of the 2015-2016 season of the New York Theatre Workshop, with performances beginning in the winter of this year.

Bowie is not expected to appear in the show.
