How A Tweet Turned Into One of the Best Multiplayer Game in Years

The name of the game is #IDARB, and you either know how this magical game was born into this world or you don’t. Though upon first glance, it may look like just another fun, frantic indie game, there is much more going on here. This game was created like a Mad-Lib, with many creators and designers collaborating with open source software. When you play the end result and learn how much fun it is, it makes the whole thing more remarkable. I call it Smash Bros on meth, but that’s just me. The most insane thing is, this game would not exist without Twitter.

Wired has a great piece deeply exploring the origins of this amazing game by designer Mike Mika and any fan of gaming owes it to themselves to read this story and see that anything is possible if you toss out just the right tweet to just the right people at just the right time.

In the 13 months since Mika sent that first tweet, #IDARB has become a chaotic, competitive multiplayer game that calls to mind Super Smash Bros. and basketball if you played them while shaking cans of soda and rickrolling friends.

The premise is simple: Two teams of up to four players apiece score points by shooting a ball into a goal. But the execution—a frenetic combobulation of crazy ideas that’s as fun to watch as it is to play—is brilliant.

This is #IDARB. It’s available now for the Xbox One. And it is unlike anything you’ve ever played.

Makes you wonder what else gaming has in store for us. More so than gaming, what the true geniuses and fans behind it have in store for us in the coming years.
