Every year, Atlanta’s Dragon Con, the famous — and largest — sci-fi/fantasy/gaming/comic convention in the South sponsors at least one charity — last year, it was three — and holds a massive blood drive during the 5-day convention.
It only makes sense, then, that the organization has formed a community service program to bring some nerdy heroism to the metro Atlanta area.
Called Dragon Con Superheroes, over 75 volunteers of all ages came out for the inaugural event on March 8. In partnership with the Georgia Conservancy, “the group installed trail map kiosks, cleaned the visitor center and picnic shelters, and maintained 9 miles of trail and 6 miles of river” at Sweetwater Creek State Park. They also collected 20 bags worth of garbage along the trail.

Next Saturday, April 26, the Superheroes will participate in the Walk to End Lupus and on May 24, they “will sort and pack food items for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Dragon Con’s official charity for 2014.”
For every project, every volunteer receives a t-shirt and will be part of a special celebration at this year’s convention.
One more Superheroes project will be organized shortly before Dragon Con 2014, allowing for those not in Georgia to participate.
