iOS to be Built Into Cars

Apple is developing a new system for connecting iPhones to cars that goes beyond simply hooking up iTunes. CarPlay, which will work only on cars that ship with the technology built-in, will let users access music apps, make calls, get spoken directions from the Maps app, and access messages.

Apple explains that voice control will be the norm but some cars will allow additional input methods:

CarPlay features Siri voice control and is specially designed for driving scenarios. It also works with your car’s controls — knobs, buttons, or touchscreen. And the apps you want to use in the car have been reimagined, so you can use them while your eyes and hands stay where they belong.

It’ll need a Lightning connector and iOS 7. Six auto manufacturers have already committed to supporting CarPlay in models to be released this year, while another dozen are working on integrating the technology.
