Virtual Reality Gaming Becoming a Thing with Oculus

Here we have Anthony Ha from Tech Crunch interviewing Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus – a company that’s trying to create some really high quality VR gaming with the “Oculus Rift” headset. And he wants to make it available to the “average gamer” (not just those with too much money to spend).

Luckey himself describes the experience as “having an enormous screen suspended in front of you” – but it moves with you. Whichever way you look, the game moves with you. This is a truly immersive gaming experience – it’ll feel like you’re really inside the game.

Oculus ran a successful Kickstarter last year raising $2.4 million dollars (omigosh) and so the product is definitely on its way. We don’t have a date yet as to when it’s going to become available to consumers – because they haven’t yet gotten developer feedback – but they’re selling developer kits on their website for $300.

The developer kits will ship “really soon” and are basically designed to allow game designers to get their hands on the technology and figure out what they can do with it. With the feedback they get from that, Oculus will then develop consumer versions and we may see a whole new level of gaming hit the mainstream.

What do you think? Is VR gaming going to take off and immerse gamers in their games like never before? Or is the idea of VR gaming more of an antiquated idea next to Google Glass and other augmented reality devices?
