At a fan event hosted for the 20th anniversary of the Sailor Moon franchise, creator Naoko Takeuchi and publisher Kodansha announced a new animated TV series coming in 2013. The original voice actors for Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask were at the event, but it was not said if they would be reprising their roles. Japanese idol group Momoiro Clover Z, who will be performing the new opening for the series, sang the new theme song and a selection of other songs from the series.
