Old School Gaming Kickstarter Hits Pledge in 8 Hours!

Just over a week ago I posted about the masterminds behind the now classic Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle games. They recently made a plea to the public,(via Kickstarter ) hoping to fund an old school text click adventure puzzle game.

They gambled that if they brought their idea for a game of this style to a major publisher that they would be laughed at, so they turned the question back on what they hoped was a still present fanbase on the market. I guess they did know that a fanbase was out there, but I am not sure they knew it was this rabid.

The goal on their Kickstarter page was $400,000. This would cover production of the game, and filming of a documentary about the process.

As of this posting, Double Fine Adventure has 56,807 people behind them with a total pledge of $1.9million dollars. This is nearly five times the original target!

The excess of funds will go right back into the game. It is now being offered on more platforms (PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android!) as well as being translated into French, Italian, German and Spanish. They also said the extra cash is going to improve the quality of the documentary as they can now purchase an original soundtrack and production value.

I find this to be an amazing story of fanbase support. What makes it even MORE amazing is that the game premise has not even been announced! Just that it would be in the same style of Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle. Whatever new characters or worlds they create; clearly their fans will be just fine with it.

I can’t wait for the game to come out. My pledge means I get a copy and get to see the documentary too!
