Remember when waiting a few years meant scoring a PlayStation for cheap? Yeah… about that.
Starting April 2, 2026, Sony is raising prices on the PS5, PS5 Pro, and even the PlayStation Portal, citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Translation: everything’s getting expensive, and so is your hobby.
Historically, PlayStation consoles got cheaper over time. The PS1 through PS4 all rewarded patient gamers with solid price drops. The PS5, on the other hand, looked at that tradition and said, “nah.” After multiple price hikes, it’s now significantly more expensive than at launch.
And Sony isn’t alone: Microsoft and Nintendo have been nudging prices upward too, while rising component costs, tariffs, and even AI-driven demand for memory are squeezing the entire industry.
The result? Gaming is starting to feel less like a mass-market hobby and more like a premium one. By the time GTA 6 drops, you might not just need storage space… you might need a better salary.
At this rate, the real next-gen upgrade isn’t graphical, it’s financial.
