GTA 6’s $400 Collector’s Box Doesn’t Even Include the Game

Grand Theft Auto VI Collector's Box

There was a time when “collector’s edition” meant something pretty simple: you paid more for the game and got a pile of cool stuff you didn’t really need. A statue, an art book, whatever. It made you feel like you’d bought something special.

Rockstar has apparently decided we don’t need that tradition anymore. They just unveiled a $400 Grand Theft Auto VI Collector’s Box, and here’s the fun part: the game isn’t in it.

To be fair, it’s not a $400 box of plastic junk. The sunglasses are Oakleys, actual Oakleys worth around $140, not some cheap pair with a Vice City logo slapped on them. You also get a fanny pack, a snapback, pins, stickers, a mirror, and a razor blade keychain. A razor blade keychain. Pair it with the mirror and congratulations, Rockstar is selling you a pocket-sized Vice City coke kit. But after dropping $400, you still don’t own the thing everyone’s been waiting years for: Grand Theft Auto VI.

And look, I get collecting. I’m a geek. I’ve bought so much dumb stuff purely because it had a Star Wars logo on it. That’s the fun of it. Which is exactly why this feels so off. This isn’t a collector’s edition that costs more because you get the game plus premium extras. It’s a $400 merch bundle that exists next to the game… which you still have to buy separately!

The funniest part? Grand Theft Auto has always been this giant satire of consumerism and greed and buying stupid expensive things. So maybe this whole thing is one big joke. Maybe Rockstar’s holding up a mirror, literally, and laughing at us for paying $400 for a box of Vice City junk. Only problem with that theory: Rockstar’s the one selling the joke. It’s not some clever outsider roasting consumer culture. It’s a multibillion-dollar company staring at millions of people desperate for its game and going, “How much more can we squeeze out of these guys?”

And that’s what makes it so fascinating, honestly. Rockstar built something so hyped they can sell you the souvenirs before the product itself. Impressive marketing, even if it’s kind of ridiculous. The real question isn’t whether the stuff in the box adds up, it’s whether you want to spend $400 on GTA VI merch and then pay again for the actual game.

$400 for a collector’s edition with no game. At least the Oakleys are nice. And if you don’t like what you see in that mirror… well, there’s always the razor blade keychain.
