Remember Ecto-Cooler? That radioactive-looking green juice that somehow tasted like childhood, citrus, and a little something you couldn’t put your finger on?
Originally created as a Ghostbusters-themed Hi-C drink in the late ’80s, Ecto-Cooler was supposed to be a simple piece of movie merchandising. Instead, it became so popular that it survived long after the cartoon disappeared.
Then Hi-C killed it.
Except… Ecto-Cooler had other plans.
It came back. Then disappeared again. Then came back AGAIN. In 2016, fans went absolutely bonkers trying to get their hands on it, with some limited-edition cans selling for more than $100 on eBay. And when Ghostbusters: Afterlife arrived in 2021, Ecto-Cooler returned once more, with some bottles reportedly reaching hundreds of dollars on the secondary market.
Watch as the folks from Weird History Food takes a look at the bizarre story of how a simple Ghostbusters promotional drink became a full-blown pop culture legend.
