I’ve gotten to the point where I shoot exclusively with my Pixel 10. It’s always with me, the camera is excellent, and for the kind of photography and video I do, it’s incredibly convenient. So I’m not exactly in the market for another camera.
And then GoPro went and made this thing.
The new MISSION 1 PRO ILS is the kind of camera that makes you look at your perfectly good phone and think, “Yeah… but what if I had a tiny cinema camera with interchangeable lenses?”
At $699.99, it’s actually surprisingly affordable for what GoPro is offering. This isn’t just a tiny action camera with a fancy spec sheet. It has a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, giving it compatibility with more than 300 lenses, along with a 1-inch Quad Bayer sensor capable of 8K60, 4K240, and up to 1080p960 slow motion using real frames rather than AI interpolation.
It also packs 10-bit color, up to 14 stops of dynamic range, GP-Log2, LUT support, focus peaking, 32-bit float audio, timecode, GPS, 50MP stills and HyperSmooth stabilization into a rugged body weighing just 197 grams.
Basically, GoPro took a ridiculously small camera and stuffed a whole lot of cinema-camera ambition into it.
Would I replace my Pixel 10 with it? Probably not.
Would I make an exception and buy one if I had the money? Oh, absolutely. Unfortunately, I have three hungry teenagers with what appear to be bottomless stomachs, plus increasingly expensive university bills, so apparently I’m supposed to spend my money on food, education, and boring things like keeping the lights on.
