Japanese nature photographer Pendora captured these incredible globular springtails launching themselves through the air so quickly that they seem to simply teleport somewhere else.
They use a tiny forked appendage called a furcula to catapult themselves away from the surface in an instant. It’s an incredibly effective escape move when you’re small enough to become someone else’s lunch.
Springtails typically live in damp environments like wet leaf litter and forest floors, and apparently, they’ve mastered the art of disappearing in a puff of… absolutely nothing. Check it out!
