Engineers at Northwestern University have unveiled the Phantom Twist, a drone that becomes almost invisible—not with cloaking technology or transparent materials, but by spinning so ridiculously fast that your brain struggles to keep up. The drone rotates up to 25 times per second, turning itself into a faint, ghostly blur that blends into the background, much like a fast-spinning fan seems to vanish.
Unlike a traditional quadcopter, Phantom Twist uses a single motor and one propeller. As the propeller spins one way, the rest of the drone spins the other, creating the motion blur effect that makes it so difficult to spot. Researchers say it’s about 10 times harder to see than a conventional drone.
The goal is to create drones that can monitor wildlife, survey fragile environments, and inspect bridges or power lines with far less visual disruption. It’s not perfect yet—the prototype still needs an external camera system to navigate, and while it’s tough to see, it’s definitely not tough to hear.
