George Lucas has never been afraid to embrace new technology, so it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that he believes AI is the future of filmmaking.
The Star Wars creator recently shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence, comparing resistance to AI with people refusing to give up horse-drawn buggies when automobiles arrived. In his view, AI is simply the next technological leap, one that will make filmmaking easier and unlock new creative possibilities.
“Artificial intelligence means it’s much easier for us to make movies,” he says. “It’s very much like sitting here saying, ‘Well, I believe the horse and the buggy is really where it’s at. These cars, they break down, they need gas, there’s all kinds of problems with them and pretty soon they’ll be making them into tanks, and then they’ll be killing people. It’s terrible.’ There’s nothing you can do about it,” he says, raising his hands. “That’s progress, it’s the future.”
Lucas also argued that AI could help verify what’s real and what’s fake, while criticizing Hollywood’s growing reliance on focus groups and fan feedback. According to him, great movies come from passionate filmmakers with a vision—not from trying to please everyone.
Given Lucas’s history of revolutionizing filmmaking through technological innovation, his stance is certainly consistent. But AI isn’t just another visual effects breakthrough. Many artists, writers, and actors worry it could replace creative work rather than simply enhance it.
One thing is certain: when the man who helped change cinema forever says AI is the future, people are going to listen… and argue.
