If YouTube ads have been testing your patience lately, DuckDuckGo just walked into the room like the hero in the third act.
As of July 8, the privacy-focused browser now blocks most YouTube ads by default. That means those painfully long pre-rolls, random mid-video interruptions, and suspicious mobile game ads promising you’ll become a billionaire by lunchtime can all disappear, without installing any extensions.
The feature is enabled automatically on Windows, macOS, and iOS. Android users can switch it on manually for now, with the default rollout coming later. The catch? It only works when you watch YouTube through the DuckDuckGo browser. The official YouTube app is still very committed to making sure you know about every VPN, meal kit, and AI startup on Earth.
DuckDuckGo isn’t reinventing the wheel here, it uses the same community-maintained filter lists that power uBlock Origin. Brave users have enjoyed similar ad blocking for years. The difference is that DuckDuckGo is making it a built-in feature for everyday users instead of something that requires a bit of geeky tinkering.
Of course, YouTube and ad blockers have been locked in an endless game of cat and mouse for many years, so don’t be surprised if Google responds with another clever countermeasure. Grab the popcorn, it looks like the next round is about to begin.
Meanwhile, YouTubers are probably staring into the distance wondering how many more sponsorships they’ll need to squeeze into each video. And before they can say, “This video is sponsored by…” someone in the comments will inevitably reply, “SponsorBlock says hello.”
The internet never changes, it just finds faster ways to skip the ads.
