War… war never changes. But Fallout developers apparently do.
If a new report is accurate, the next journey through the nuclear wasteland could be in the hands of the very studio that gave us one of the most beloved entries in the franchise.
Following Microsoft’s sweeping Xbox restructuring, Bloomberg reports that Obsidian Entertainment has been tapped to develop the next Fallout game, with Josh Sawyer, the director behind 2010’s fan-favorite Fallout: New Vegas, leading the project.
The move comes amid significant upheaval at Xbox. Obsidian reportedly laid off around a quarter of its staff, while Microsoft’s new gaming strategy has canceled several projects, including a planned sequel to Avowed. Instead, the studio is said to be shifting its focus toward one of Xbox’s biggest and most valuable franchises.
For Fallout fans, this could be huge news.
Although Bethesda has overseen the series for nearly two decades, Fallout: New Vegas remains one of the most beloved entries in the franchise, and many players have long wished for Obsidian to return to the post-apocalyptic wasteland. With Sawyer reportedly back in charge, and Bethesda expected to collaborate on the project, it could mark a long-awaited reunion.
Of course, nothing is official yet. Microsoft has declined to comment, and Bloomberg notes that the new Fallout project’s direction could still change as Xbox’s restructuring continues.
Still, after years without a brand-new single-player Fallout game, the possibility of the New Vegas team returning to the series is enough to get fans excited… even if it comes under the unfortunate circumstances of widespread layoffs and canceled projects.
