There comes a point in life when you have to ask yourself an important question: Do I hate folding laundry enough to spend eight grand on a robot?
Enter Isaac 1, the latest home robot from Weave Robotics. This adorable little helper looks suspiciously like Baymax, complete with oversized arms and a friendly appearance that’s somehow both comforting and slightly terrifying.
Isaac 1 cruises around your house on a motorized base, shrinks down to just 90 cm (about 3 feet) when it’s not working, and stretches up to 1.75 meters (5’9″) when it’s time to tackle your household mess. Its two-finger grippers can fold laundry, make your bed, fluff pillows, and clean up whatever random junk has taken over your living room.
Sadly, we’re not quite living in the future yet. If Isaac gets confused, a human operator may have to step in and rescue it from whatever impossible challenge your wrinkled T-shirt presents. The goal is full autonomy eventually, but for now, your laundry might occasionally require tech support.
Of course, all this convenience comes at a price. Isaac 1 costs a cool $8,000, or you can subscribe for $449 per month (plus a refundable deposit). At that point, you have to wonder whether it’s cheaper to simply buy more clothes and never do laundry again.
The robot will begin shipping in California this fall before expanding across the United States.
