Meet Argus: The 20-Eyed, 20-Legged Robot That Has No Front Side

Engineers: “Yes.”

Meet Argus, a bizarre spherical robot covered in 20 legs and 20 eyes that looks like a cross between a sea urchin, a spider, and something that definitely shouldn’t be staring at you from every direction at once.

Unlike most robots that have a front, Argus basically said, “What if every side was the front?” It can walk, climb, track objects, and navigate rough terrain without needing to turn around. Lose a leg? Keep going. Lose an eye? Nineteen more are still watching.

The goal isn’t just to make a weird robot, but to explore a concept called dynamic symmetry, allowing the robot to move and react almost equally well in any direction. The result is a machine that could one day explore disaster zones, forests, or even other planets.
